Hi there Mark,

You'll have a faaabulous time in France! In Paris you won't have a
problem if you don't speak French, in the countryside carry a phrase
book with you and have a go - just like any other country, people will
be patient and try to help you.

I currently live in Australia, am Australian, have lived in Paris, and
spend a month in Paris each year.

Twenty years ago there were stereotypes about the French, the English,
the Americans, the Australians etc etc, and of course some of those
stereotypes 'stick'.

My last visit was June this year, and I am constantly amazed at how
many French people want to try their English - if each person is
willing to try a few words in the other's language, a friendly bond is
formed.

On my website about Paris, I have created some mini audio bites for
people to learn how to say the most common phrases in French which
might help you, and I also write about the French culture - here are a
few links if you have time:

Tips About French Culture - Learn to understand the French

Are the French rude or just misunderstood?

Here is my page with my own translations of common French phrases

Have a great trip Mark

What you heard was wrong.

It probably tastes that way to Europeans. . .

Tastes what way?

"water - ish"

Plenty of beer that taste like that in Europe too.

In the uk some of the blandest tasting beers (or euro-fizz as they're
called) are also the strongest. Up to 8% alcohol I believe.

here (north edge of the Mississippi Delta) I either go to the local
brew-pub where I'll get their absolutely delicious porter this time of
year...

Memphis? Boscos (or is that Nashville)?

or a local free house with an impressive domestic microbrew selection
(and import draft)

Flying Saucer?

where I'd like to find good domestic beer is France...

Depends on where you are in France. There are a number of good
specialist breweries and even a few brewpubs, including the
Trois Brasseurs group. There are quite a few good specialist
beer bars too, and Belgian beer is also easy to find. I've
never had difficulty finding decent beer, domestic or otherwise,
in France.

Probably you have never been to France, otherwise you should know about
the Alsace with is Kronenbourg, 33 and 1664 and many more. But it is
probably too sophisticated to your tase.

I guess you are "too sophisticated" to know how to properly quote, eh

Too sophisticated to appreciate real French Gnat's **** (TM)?

My thoughts exactly. A bar in Hong Kong last month had a "special" on that
1664 garbage for HK$38 (EUR3.60, GBP2.80). They couldn't understand why I
wouldn't have drunk it for free.

If you want to taste something really foul, try drinking it at room
temperature.

I imagine it's a magical enema
