Default Cop Killer escapes UK wearing muslim veil

Police killer escapes in veil
20/12/06
By Paul Jeeves

A SUSPECTED police killer escaped capture by fleeing Britain disguised
as a Muslim woman.

Asylum seeker Mustaf Jama hid beneath a full-face niqab veil to sneak
through Heathrow posing as his sister.

Jama, who is wanted for the murder of policewoman Sharon Beshenivsky,
also wore a flowing head-to-toe jilbab as he fled to Somalia.

The Muslim gangster had been freed from jail six months earlier when
Home Office officials ruled it would be unfair to deport him to his
war-torn homeland because it was too dangerous.

The scandal emerged yesterday as Jama's brother Yusuf was convicted
of the murder of 38-year-old WPC Beshenivsky in a bungled robbery.
Muzzaker Shah, 25, was also convicted of murder and two accomplices
were convicted of manslaughter.

Jama was Britain's most wanted man when, during last year's
Christmas holidays, he sneaked through Heathrow - even though air,
rail and sea ports were on red alert following the murder in Bradford
the month before.

He used his sister's passport to get through a series of security
checks. At no stage was he asked to remove the veil so officials could
do a proper identity check.

There would have been opportunities as he checked-in for the flight, at
the hand-luggage security screening, when passports are produced at
embarkation and when boarding the plane.

Last night the Home Office said that although all those who wear a veil
are checked as they arrive in the UK, this is "rarely done" for
departing passengers.

A spokesman confirmed: "It's not an automatic policy. Immigration
officers reserve the right to ask people to remove the veil in order to
confirm their identification."

If necessary, a passenger can be taken to a private room and be asked
to remove their veil by a female officer, he said.

BAA, which runs Heathrow, said it is ultimately up to airline cabin
staff during boarding whether to ask for a veil to be lifted, a power
which is not rigorously enforced.

One intelligence source said: "The implications of this are truly
frightening.
"The fact that a man who, at the time, was Britain's most wanted
person walked through airport security checks dressed as a woman could
be interpreted as an open invitation to terrorists to sneak on to a
jumbo jet and blow it up.

"We know he flew from Heathrow to Somalia sometime between Christmas
and New Year last year and is in hiding out there.

"The police are determined to get him back to the UK to face justice
but because Somalia is effectively lawless it's an unbelievably
difficult task.

"But it is incredible, given the huge manhunt that was on for him,
that he could just walk through Heathrow dressed as a Muslim woman."

The revelation could add further weight to calls by 98 per cent of
Daily Express readers for the controversial niqab to be banned in
Britain.

The Jama brothers arrived in the UK illegally in 1993 after their
mother conned immigration officials by paying a Kenyan businessman to
pose as their father.

Despite committing a string of violent offences, including armed
robbery, Mustaf 26, was not deported because the Home Office ruled
Somalia was too violent.

Police believe that, with the hunt on for the WPC's killers, he
hatched his escape after being tipped-off by staff at Heathrow with
links to London's notorious Thug Fam Gang, of which he was a member.

Officers are also desperate to track down criminal mastermind Piran
Ditta Khan, 58, who put together the four-man robbery gang which killed
mother-of-three Sharon.

Khan, a millionaire who ran a curry restaurant empire, is in hiding in
his native Pakistan.

The gang face life terms when they are sentenced on Friday.
British-born Asian Muzzaker Shah pleaded guilty to murder, robbery and
possessing a submachine gun and 9mm pistol - the murder weapon -
with intent to endanger life.

Yusuf Jama, 20, was convicted of the same offences by the jury at
Newcastle Crown Court.

Getaway drivers Faisal Razzaq, 25, and his brother Hassan, 26, were
convicted of manslaughter, robbery and possessing guns but cleared of
having the guns with intent to endanger life.

It is still not clear which of the gang fired the fatal shot during the
raid on Universal Express travel agents.

In court Yusuf Jama claimed he accidentally shot WPC Beshenivsky and
her colleague Teresa Milburn, who survived. He said he had downed a
bottle of vodka and had been smoking cannabis. The prosecution claimed
Shah was the gunman and that Jama made his confession as part of an
elaborate ruse to confuse the jury and escape justice.

Rookie Sharon, who had been on the force only nine months, was shot
through the heart as she responded to reports of the robbery.

Her husband Paul, 44, spent the past week in court to hear the verdicts
and come face to face with the killers.

He said: "When I saw them sat in that dock I just stared at them -
eyeballed them - apparently they didn't like it."

Detective Superintendent Andy Brennan of West Yorkshire Police, who
headed the investigation, vowed to track down Mustaf Jama and Piran
Ditta Khan.
He said: "We are dedicated to locating them and bringing them back to
face justice in the UK.

When they left the Universal Express travel agents they had already
inflicted serious injuries on some of the occupants.

"They had sufficient time to run from the premises without
confronting the officers.

"It is also possible that they could have struggled past the officers
without the need for one of them to shoot both officers in a
cold-blooded and callous manner."

The £20million trial saw the robbers granted exceptional human rights
concessions to ensure their ability to fast and pray during Ramadan was
not affected.

The court had to see that the men were back in their prison cells at
Durham in time for prayers and on one day the court did not sit because
it was a Muslim holy day.

Despite their supposed devout beliefs, some of the gang held a drink
and drug-fuelled orgy with prostitutes the night before the fatal raid.

Two hours before the robbery, three of the gangsters attempted to pray
at a mosque close to their robbery HQ - a Home Office-funded property
for asylum seekers in Leeds.

But as a result of their night of excess, they arrived too late to
participate.

When did they discover this? If they knew he was in disguise, why did
they let him leave? If they found out after he has left, well how did
they found out how he was disguised. Did he make a phone call from
Somalia to taunt them?

A good friend told me that during the Orientation Week (Freshie Week)
at the Islamic University in PJ, the stall selling the black outfit
which covers the wearer all over except for the eyes reported
extremely good sale and the stall-keeper had to rush their suppliers
for more.

Apparently, many outfits were purchased by men students who now have
the perfect disguise to visit their girl friends in the female wing of
the halls of residence

Like I said above, this is only heresay .... :-)

Seems to have been some rather well-informed 'speculation'
