It still is a good option.

These people are talking about events that happened 4 years ago.
Cambodia has changed massively in that time. Heck only 7 years ago
getting taken hostage by the Khmer Rouge was a legitimate concern.

These days it's no more dangerous than Thailand (IMO).

Grab the latest Lonely Planet for Cambodia and have a read. Even better,
compare the 1996 and current LPs to see how much the place has changed.

I think that Bangkok Airways or Air Siem Reap is covering that route.
I flew Bangkok Airways from BKK to Yangoon and it was very convenient.
Maybe the LCC carrier Airasia makes the run as well.

As others have pointed out, you can fly President via Phnom Penh, but they
fly Bangkok-Phnom Penh only 4 times a week (twice a day for Phnom
Penh-Siem Reap). If I remember correctly, the fares were about $100 for
BKK-PNH, and $55 for PNH-REP, one-leg, plus airport taxes. I don't know
the return fares (should be less than twice those prices).

And as others have also pointed out, Phnom Penh is not anymore the
insecure place it used to be. So you could consider spending a day or two
there to split the journey.

Air travel pass. a minimum of 3 coupons are required. BKK-REP costs USD
80 per direction + taxes. The inter-thailand flights are USD 50.
