While India has a tremendous amount to offer, I wouldn't recommend it
to a novice traveller.

Thailand is a much easier first-time Asian trip.

Other possibilities include:

Japan - if you have the budget.

Hong Kong and its surroundings - for a short trip (up to 10 days).

China - if you stick to Beijing/Shanghai/Xian/Hong Kong. Off the
beaten track travel in China can be difficult.

Peninsular Malaysia - I consider it a lower priority, but some prefer
it to Thailand.

i would.. depending on the region you can have a more or less strenuous
trip.
eg. going to Goa shdn't be a problem, even for the most unexperienced
traveler.. visiting to Calcutta is quite a different thing
