Default Budget Travel to Ayers Rock (Uluru) and Alice Springs

I was absolutely startled at how expensive Hotels and Motels are in
Uluru. Too make matters worse I will be arriving 1st JUly 09 which is
the start of the peak season. Alice Springs is definitely NOT expensive
with a better choice of hotels and prices.

Package tours for 3 days to Uluru/Kings Canyon/Alice Springs start from
$710.00.

Does anydody out there have any thoughts or suggestions in doing it on
the cheap.??????

TIA

Welcome to supply and demand. There isn't that much accommodation at Yulara
(Uluru) and lots of people want to go there. They can charge what they like
and get away with it. The camping ground is probably the cheapest option,
using a tent (if you have one) or their cabins (not cheap but cheaper than
the motels). Expect to also pay a fortune for food and drink and just about
everything else. It's not a cheap destination by any standards, and you
won't be impressed with your value for money in terms of the accommodation
and food. But if you want to see Uluru etc, there aren't a lot of options.
