best value country for renting a flat?
I'm recently retired, and live on a (very) small pension in the UK. I'd
like to have a change of scene for a month or two - not just a holiday, more a 'living abroad experience' but have little money to do this. Many people come to the UK from Eastern Europe because wages are so poor, so it got me thinking that if wages are low there, rents must be low there as well, and this got me thinking about renting a small flat somewhere in Eastern Europe for a month - or two months if I could afford it, and maybe try to live as part of the local community. Is this feasible? I'd really appreciate any advice as to which countries would be the best ones to consider, given that I'm on a limited budget. What would I need to spend to keep myself (rent, food, etc) for a month? I'd willingly forego any sightseeing in order to save money - I just want the experience of living in another country for a while. Thanks in advance Simon. |

I'm not sure I know what you mean by 'if you want to live at european standards'. I just want to do my own cooking, stay in the flat reading, go for walks, maybe go to the cinema if there are subtitled films. Nothing that would cost much. It's the cost of the rent and the food I want to know about. |

True, but that would then be rather a lot in rent per sqm per month! Or perhaps he is going from per sqm to total rent for an "average" sized flat - either way rather confusing. Flats in Stockholm City are now at prices from 3000-6000/sq metre. Low salaries and low costs for renting a flat is true for many in East Europe but near always it's a matter of buildings provided and subsidized from the government. The free market typically charge much more for flats and for a short term visitor from West it's a matter of demand and supply. But anyway with some luck the o.p maybe can find something if now the place doesn't matter so much . Could be an interesting experience. I think also there're reason to stick to an EU country and avoid the rest being too troublesome for permits. Most countries that have no visa requirements you could get by as a tourist for a month or two I would say. I agree it would be an interesting experience, and I find it good that there are older people interested in doing that. It wouldn't be easy though to find a cheap short-term rental, especially from a distance and if you don't speak the language. What about some sort of flat swap, Simon? I believe the internet has forums for people who are interested in this. David |

In Czech Republic you could look for a cheap holyday house/apartment/room far away from the bigger city. Southern Bohemia can be a good choice and if you go there offseason it must be possible to rent an apartment for about ? 15,- a day or less. Prices for food and drinks are very low, to get an idea about those prices you can take a look at www.lidl.cz , 29 Czech crowns is about 1 euro. Take a look at this page for an idea of offered apartments/rooms and prices: http://www.mestovimperk.cz . Succes, Ricardo. |

My father has now more or less permanently moved to Bamberg in Germany. Much cheaper than the UK, fantastic medical service, beautiful city. T. |
