Polonianet: new mag for Poles Wed 28/03/07 - Polonianet is a new Flemish magazine targeted at the 70,000 Poles living and working in Belgium. It is being distributed from 180 points across Belgium free of charge. Written in Polish the publication intends to address issues close to the heart of many Poles who have travelled to Belgium to work and live. It should provide answers to questions like "How can I find my way around on the Belgian labour market? What kind of labour permits do I need? Where can my children go to school and what kind of cultural events are on offer in Brussels?" The magazine will concentrate on providing lots of practical information. The daily De Standaard reports Polonianet is an initiative of the Mechelen-based publishers Decom. Roger De Laet of Decom says that officially there are some 70,000 Poles living in Belgium. They are mainly concentrated in the big cities, in Brussels and Antwerp. How many Poles are living in Belgium without the right paperwork is hard to say. Whatever the case may be the Mechelen-based publishing house is convinced there are enough to make the magazine profit-making through advertising. The Poles living in Belgium form a close network visiting their own shops and restaurants. Roger De Laet told De Standaard that Polonianet is a first. It's the first time that a magazine will be targeted at one single nationality living in Belgium. Ula Wojciechowska will head an editorial staff that chiefly consists of Polish Belgians. The articles will be in Polish, but some will have a short summary in Dutch or French so that non Polish-speakers can also read what it is about. In this way Polonianet can serve as a bridge between the Polish community and ordinary Belgians. The publication will appear five times a year and have a circulation of 10,000 copies. The intention is to double this to 20,000 soon. |
