Assuming that "BC" in the subject line means British Columbia, doing the trip entirely by train would mean taking at least three of them. The only cities in Canada with train service to the US are Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal, so you'd have to get to Vancouver first, which may or may not be possible by train, depending on your starting point. Leaving Vancouver, you'd then have to spend one night and most of a day between trains in Seattle*, two nights on the second train, and a fourth night between trains in Chicago; and the return trip would be similar. This is perfectly reasonable if you like trains that much, of course, but not for someone who didn't even mention them in her original query. (The extra night at the western end of the trip could be avoided by using a bus instead of the Vancouver-Seattle train, but still...) * Or Edmonds or Everett; the Seattle-Chicago train doubles back over that much of the route from Vancouver to Seattle. -- Mark Brader | "I have on occasion manufactured technical terms that Toronto | have made it into common use in the literature. | But not many, and I'm licensed." --John Lawler My text in this article is in the public domain. |
