Default scammed in Cambodia by a hooker

Cambodia set-up

Editor;
I'm asking that you post this letter to aid other travelers to
Cambodia. Last week a friend and myself were traveling to Sihanoukville
via Koh Kong and as I have done many times before we booked a hotel for
the night. We then set out for dinner and a few drinks. As we had one
of the travel guides from the border (tall guy with small beard spoke
better English than myself), he picked us up at the hotel after dinner
and took us to the famed Chicken Ranch so we could fine some company.
We then returned to the hotel and I had a problem with the girl, so
I sent her on her way. About 1 hour later there was a knock at my door;
there was my tour guide saying we had to go to the police station or
they would come here and arrest me, as a compliant was made against me
by the girl.
Upon arrival I was told that the girl had said I made her take
drugs and that I beat her up. Of course there were no marks and no
drugs. Then it hit me: sounds like a set-up. Of course she was crying
and putting on quite a show. I told them that this was just not true
and to go ahead and lock me up. But no, they wanted to settle this now,
tonight. Again I said go to hxxl.
This went on for 2 hours. The starting price was 1000 U.S Dollars
and I was told by the tour guide in the company of the police that if I
didn't pay I would never be seen again. At that point I became
worried, having lived here in Thailand for 6 years I have heard some
bad stories. After another hour we had the price down to 200 dollars
and then we settled for 150 dollars. I was then free to go after I put
my fingerprint on a piece of paper and gave them my name.
I would advise you to stay away from Koh Kong and Cambodia in the
future. This was my 15th trip to Cambodia.

This sort of thing is not limited to Cambodia and Thailand, it happens
all over.

In the Philippines, for example, very similar incidents are
increasingly common. One scenario is for a foreign traveler to come to
an understanding with someone about sex for compensation, only to find
that the story changes from "yes, yes, yes" to "no, no, no" and/or to
"more money" back in the hotel. The situation deteriorates, perhaps
with an argument being heard by hotel employees, perhaps with the girl
leaving the room visibly angry, perhaps in tears. Later, the girl,
escorted by police, confronts the foreign traveler, leading to a visit
to a police substation, leading to claims that the foreign traveler has
violated one or more laws. Papers for filing charges are filled out,
accompanied by well-rehearsed explanations about how much trouble the
foreign traveler is about to be in, about how difficult it will be to
deal with charges once they are officially filed, about how much better
it would be for the foreign traveler to come to an amicable financial
settlement before charges are filed, etc. The police will usually be
happy to provide transportation to a bank with an ATM machine so that
the foreign traveler can conveniently withdraw a few hundred dollars in
order to make the financial settlement. The foreign traveler ends up
poorer but wiser. The girl and individual police officers/officials
end up sharing a small bonanza.

No one deserves this. This is a set up. there are set ups in many
forms of business and politics.

Sex is natural and will always be part of human interaction.

There is nothing wrong with two people making an arrangement between
themselves to exchange money for sex.

The best response is probably to stick to your guns and never pay
anything.

Another thing you can do beforehand in a strange city is to go with
the girl to another hotel room. Not your real hotel room. There are
many hotels in Asia known as "short time houses." Then when you are
finished having fun, leave quickly making sure she does not know where
you go.

You should always talk to the girl carefully before going with her.
Don't go with a girl because some man introduces you. Meet her
yourself.

If you can take a digital picture of the people before they try this
scam, like when you first meet them.

Then if they do, post it on the internet under the name of the
country. Print the photo out at a local internet shop and post it at a
bulletin board in the town where it happened.

Another reason this happens is when people get drunk. You do not need
to get drunk to enjoy sex. You will be taken advantage of more
easily.

Also if you can stay longer in the country you can find out more about
these people and "persuade" them not to do this anymore.

If the person you meet has bad intentions the same thing could happen
wherever you happened to find them. Unfortunately, the most successful
scams of this type are often pulled by people who initially appear to
be the most respectable and trustworthy. Anyone, from the well dressed
"university student" in the hotel lobby "waiting for her friend", to
the man in the expensive suit in the street who claims to be a
"doctor" and wants to introduce you to his "friend" who owns a gem
shop could all be up to some trick. It takes quite a lot of experience
to distinguish between those who are after your money and those who
are genuinely friendly, and very often you only learn your lesson the
hard way.

You are completely disconnected from reality.

The female in the situation is being exploited by someone from more affluent
circumstances...who, at the end of the day just walks away, leaving the
victim to be victimised again...thanks for nothing.

Would it not be preferable to donate the money that you spent exploiting
someone who is vulnerable towards helping that person escape their
vulnerability.

When, in your mind, you decide that you will engage in the exploitation of
another human, no matter how trivial you may believe this to be, yet again,
you deserve everything you get.

All I have to say is, that's what you get when you pay for sex.

I'm not a religious person - but I do have moral standards, and paying for
sex is immoral.

The "victimless crime" is never victimless, and is a crime (whether it's
illegal there or not)...

No that is not what you get when you pay for sex.

You could say the same thing about government corruption which is also
theft.

You could say the same thing about people selling you shoddy goods on
ebay or from a walk-in store.

You could say anytime you get ripped off, it's because your activity
was immoral.

Exchanging money for sex is a free will arrangement between two
individuals. there is nothing wrong with it.

It should not be illegal at all.

Paying for sex is not immoral at all, and it hurts no one.

I've never paid for sex either, but IMHO prostitution is just another
service like many (of course only if the person providing the service
freely chooses to do so and is old enough). There is nothing "immoral"
in paying for sex.
