Default Hong Kong Exchange Rate on July 1, 2004

The consumer exchange rate for $1,000 US travelers checks was 7.775 less a
$60 HK commission.
The consumer exchange rate for $1,000 US in $100 US banknotes was 7.775 less
a $51 HK commission.
Money was exchanged at Hang Seng, the second largest bank in Honk Kong.

My Bank of America ATM card and Citibank MasterCard both carried a 3%
commission rate, even at the Bank of America in Hong Kong. Commission is
based on transaction - not amount (in my case). Citibank in Hong Kong would
only do $250US a day. Exchanging US banknotes isn't worth the extra $9 HK I
got when you consider the safety afforded by carrying travelers checks,
particularly if you are going to limit your stay to the city. If you're on
a back road to Tibet, then carry the $100 bills and hope you're not robbed.
