Default Hotels in Pasadena, California

I'll be in the area in the first week of February.

Any hotel recommendations ($100 - $150 range)?

Also, any comments on Holiday Inn Express Pasadena?

Thanks.

Last year, some friends and I stayed at the Hilton Garden
Inn in Arcadia, which is just off Huntington Drive just a
10-15 minute drive from downtown Pasadena. The rooms have
free high-speed Internet access, and there's a nice breakfast
area downstairs where they also serve fresh cookies at
various times. We all liked the place a lot.

I just checked their website, and the rooms are just under
$100.

We had some relatives visit us over Christmas. They stayed at a
downtown L.A. hotel (the Biltmore) and each day took the Gold Line
metro ($2.00) from downtown's Union Station to Pasadena. Could be an
option for you as there are many more hotels in downtown Los Angeles
-vs- Pasadena.

That is decidedly not true. Have you ever driven down Colorado Blvd and see
the many motels along there?

"Motels" is the operative word in your posting; refer to original
posting, ie. "hotels".

For $100 - $150, you ought to be able to do better than a Holiday Inn
Express.

You've probably already booked, but, if not, I'd suggest considering
the layout of Pasadena. All things equal, I'd think you'd like to be
near the corner of Colorado and Fair Oaks. That's Pasadena's center
streets. "Old Town" is mostly to the west of this corner. There are
oodles of shops and restaurants all centered around "Old Town" [with
other shopping concentrations at Paseo Colorado and South Lake] 3500
East Colorado [the address of your Holiday Inn Express] puts you 35
blocks east of "center." Short blocks, but, still, this must be at
least 3 or 4 miles. Too far to easily walk. Look for something closer
to the center streets and you'll be well-placed for shopping and
restaurant choices in the evening.

Without considering price, the following hotels would be within easy
walking distance of Old Town:

Old Pasadena Courtyard by Marriott
The Westin Pasadena
Hilton Pasadena
Sheraton Pasadena

The Vagabond Inn is within easy walking distance of South Lake, and
walkable [but a bit longish] to Old Town.

The Saga Motor Hotel and the Westway Inn are farther, but not
impossibly far from either Old Town or, especially, South Lake.

The Best Western Colorado Inn and Pasadena Travelodge are pretty much
at the edge of normal walking distances to South Lake.

The Quality Inn Pasadena is *really* too far to walk to either the Old
Town or South Lake areas. On the other hand, it is within easy walking
distance of the Sierra Madre Villa gold line station, which you could
ride to Memorial Park station, which is within easy walking distance of
Old Town. That said, if you plan to do this, you should walk the area
a bit in the day time to make sure you don't get lost. Also, be
prepared for the area around Sierra Madre Villa to get pretty deserted
as the night wears on.

If you decide you don't want the adventure of going to Old Town, there
should be scattered restaurants [fewer, but some] within a reasonable
distance of any of the above-noted motels. Also, for the Quality Inn,
I know there are several eating places [and a couple of huge stores] on
Foothill Blvd, just north of the Sierra Madre Villa Station.

Incidentally, if you have a car and you are in the area on a Friday
night, Monrovia has a wonderful farmer's market from about 5-9pm. From
the Sierra Madre Villa station, head east on Foothill Blvd about five
miles and turn right at Myrtle. Look for parking pretty much as soon
as you turn. You may need to park on a side street. [You could also
take the 210 freeway east, exit at Myrtle and go north about a mile.
But during rush hour, Foothill will probably run faster than the 210].

There are plenty of foods [prepared and raw] and craft booths at the
farmer's market. In addition to the "street scene," there are also
plenty of regular sit-down restaurants and shops along Myrtle that you
could eat or shop at.
