More than you used to be able to, yes. But the smaller local shops will often still be cash-only, or at best take only local cards. It's a good idea to carry a reasonable amount of cash with you (which is safe, the crime rate is very low). Bob M. |

Japan is a big country, there are undoubedly millions of restaurants in hundreds of towns and cities. In "average" restaurants it will be much easier for you to pay with yen than to use a credit card. We can only guess which ones you'll go into, right? You'll find out exactly how often you can do it though, by asking before you begin eating every single time. -- ///--- |

Not as much as in the US but there is little risk in carrying several hundred dollars worth of cash. Heck, if you drop your wallet you can come back 4 hours later and find a half dozen Japanese guarding it for you. -- Donald R. Newcomb DRNewcomb (at) attglobal (dot) net |

Smaller restaurants may not take credit cards just because of the trouble involved and the extra markup required. Like in many countries, you will see pictures of credit card logos posted on or near the entry of a restaurant that takes those cards. The more expensive the restaurant, the more likely they accept credit cards. So just keep an eye out before entering to be sure but always have enough cash to cover your meal. Use of credit cards in Japan
Smaller Japanese businesses usually do not accept credit cards. Even larger
ones prefer cash. Tourist hotels etc will generally accept them. Cash is definitely King in Japan. As others have said - it's a safe country for tourists and locals (though organised crime is active on a non-personal level). "zxcvar" wrote in message ups.com... Greetings! That's about the only consistent location. I've encountered others, and have heard big plans for a systemic change. But right now: post offices. -- ///--- |

To find one that did belong, and draw cash using my Visa debit card, we had to ask for specific directions. There was usually one at major railway stations, and public places such as malls or shopping centers, and I'm talking about major Japanese cities such as Tokyo and Kyoto. Perhpas things have changed in the meantime, as they should. jrk -- Dave Fossett Saitama, Japan |
