Need dining recommendations for Hsinchu, Taiwan
With so many companies now in the Science-Based Industrial
Park in Hsinchu, I know that the city sees a fairly good number of foreign visitors - and I'll be among them toward the end of next month. I've stayed in Hsinchu once before, but wasn't very impressed with my choices for dining. (We stayed at the Ambassador Hotel, and outside of the restaurants in the hotel and the Pig & Whistle pub - good beer, only fair food - down the street, couldn't find much.) Anyone have any suggestions for a good place to eat in Hsinchu? (We're VERY open to just about any cuisine.) Bob M. |

You've got to get the companies you visit to write, in Chinese, the names and addresses of the decent places to show the drivers. I've eaten wonderful meals there, but I have no idea of the names or locations of the places I went. You could try explaining to the hotel concierge what you want, but they will likely direct you to the kind of places you're not interested in. |

Yes, we've done that, but we (my business associate and myself) are both of the sort who would just as soon get out and walk around town, hopefully with some idea of a decent eating spot to find at the end of the walk. I've had some pretty good meals there, too, but they were clear-the-hell-and -gone away from the hotel, and the chances of me finding them again on foot are zero. (One trick we've started using is to carry a small portable GPS with us, and log those places that we DO find. Later on, plotting that location on a map is easy.) The trick we've found there is to ask the concierge, or anyone else around, where THEY like to go to eat, after they've given the usual list of spots they're supposed to send foreigners/tourists to. Wow, that is a great idea. You could write a book of places with their coordinates. Now I have a reason to buy a GPS. |
