Dubai during Ramadan
Hi
We are going to Dubai for 10 nights next September for our honeymoon (then flying to Thailand). I've just found out that this is during Ramadan and I was wondering how this might affect our visit? We intend to stay inside the hotel grounds most of the time (we just want to relax - couldn't care less about sightseeing haha). Thanks in advance! Robbie |

It's been a while since I've been in an Islamic country during Ramadan. The short answer is that it's quite impolite (and possibly illegal) to eat, drink, smoke or chew gum in front of a Moslem from sun up to sun down. The hotels I've stayed in set aside a separate small dining room for non-Moslems to eat in during the day. You might find that the hotel will not serve drinks and food at poolside during the day. -- Donald R. Newcomb DRNewcomb (at) attglobal (dot) net |

That's probably true about the pool. Dubai is definitely more liberal now that it used to be, so shouldn't be too much of a problem for tourists to get food during the day at major hotels. At the risk of repeating Donald's response, it's possible that certain very public areas will be closed off but if you're at a resort like Madinat Jumeirah there's plenty of discreet alternatives. But outside the hotel, eating, drinking (even bottled water), chewing gum and smoking is still a no-no. It affects residents more; the liquor stores are shut for a month and Thursday was the mad stock-up day! Cheers, George W Russell Bangalore |

Robbie Will this Ramadan also affect passengers in transit on Dubai International Airport? What is the exact date of Ramadan? Is it 4 weeks starting September, 13? Kind regards. |
