I see a lot of people losing time and money whenever the Olympics come
to town. A few people get rich, everyone else suffers (including, in
many cases, the taxpayers).

Canadian taxpayers are still paying for the 1976 Montreal Games...

The Olympics is a nice idea on paper, but really it's an idea now that is as
passe as holding a World's Fair (remember them?). There is really no reason
to hold them anymore, other sporting events/venues can easily take their
place...

And since the focus these days seems to be on the "professional" (read:
"commercial") aspect of sport, let private entities pay for any "Olympics",
the public doesn't need still more of their money poured down a rat hole...

Here in New York, I don't know a single person who wants the Olympics.
We're hoping some European city gets suckered into hosting it. The
construction projects would create massive disruptions for city
residents for months if not years leading up to the games, and our
taxes are high enough without having to pay off Olympics debt. Who
really cares about the Olympics anymore anyway, with ten different 24-7
sports channels on the telly? What sport would anyone want to watch
that you can't watch normally - synchronized diving? team handball?
ribbon gymnastics?

Well said!

Well, people will stlll be coming to London, Paris, Madrid, NYC or
Moscow. They're hardly out of the way destinations. I don't see your
point. The regeneration in Manchester just because of the _Commonwealth_
Games was pretty significant, and proved a real boost to the city.

But David the UK is a rich country and Manchester's situation was improving
in any case...

I can see the Olympics being a "prestige" event that proclaims a country as
finally being an equal contender on the world stage, e.g. Tokyo 1964 but for
any developed nation it's really a waste of time and money. Sports venues
are nice, but they are really a luxury for the few paid for by the taxes of
the many. There is *no* economic value accruing to a city or region from
holding professional sporting events...in fact professional sports teams,
facilities, etc. are *always* a money - loser...

Let private business pay the price for any professional sporting
events/infrastructure, us taxpayers are sick and tired of subsidising
wealthy team owners, etc. etc....

A city like New York needs to spend those billions on a direct rail link to
JFK airport, London's subways need re - building, Paris needs to pay
attention to it's poorer citizens in the suburbs...no taxpayer money needs
to be spent on sports.

And yet, civic institutions, including municipal, state and national
govts. rush to get their bids in.
