Default Advice of Family travel in South Africa

I need some advice.
We are planning to travel to South Africa in Dec (Tentative). We (2
kids aged 6 & 7, my wife and myself) normally travel free and easy.
This is the first time we are traveling to places outside Europe or
Australia/NZ.

Our style is we only book a rental car and some initial accommodation
and then follow on a general route we have planned earlier to see the
sites and places.

Can this approach be applied in South Africa. We intend to spend about
18 days.

Dear Victor,

As December is the main summer school holiday season there will be large
numbers of South Africans on holiday during this month (especially busy
between abouth 13th December to 4th January). Also this is the high season
for international tourism to South Africa. This is going to cause you
problems if you do not book in advance. An alternative might be the end of
summer (early March) which would be quieter.

Regards,

Clive Reid

Hello,

We spent about 3 weeks in South Africa in january, with our three children,
from Jo'burg to Capetown.

We rent a car in Jo'burg and reserved the first
night in a citylodge hotel, and that all. It's was great. There's no problem
to find hotel, backpackers, on the road. The children was very happy,
there's a lot of attractions and animals. We'll come back in march 2004 for
two weeks in north of SA.

Have a good trip.

bruno
