Hi, I'm travelling through NZ in March by rental car. I am flying into
Auckland, and I also want to visit Auckland. My questions is how busy
or dangerous the driving is there, being the largest city in NZ. There
are some cities - you know who you area - where it is practically
suicidal to drive there as a visitor. But I am comfortable with
driving on the left side of the road / ride side of the car (although
I'm American, I've car-toured UK and Ireland already) so I think it
might be OK. An alternative would be to take a bus into the city from
the Airport, and just get the rental car as I leave Auckland to visit
the rest of the country.

Thanks in advance,

you'll be fine it's ok but maybe avoid rush hour to start with. I found
even rush hour quiet compared to the UK

It's a very spread-out city and only the rush hour around 8-9am and
6-7pm is to be avoided. No, rent a car in Auckland, it will help you see
it better (Although I did well enough with taxis and buses); still I had
friends who drove me around.

Alright, are there car parks or places along the street, I'd imagine,
in Auckland? I arrive at 6 am, but don't want to start touring all day
right off, so maybe a little bit of Auckland after I get my car hire
and leave in the afternoon, and then pick up some more of Auckland on
my last day. Cool. I really want to visit those volcanoes in
particular. I think volcanoes are awesome.

The ones in the city are not so spectacular; the best one is the
Rangitoto island one where you can climb up in a 45mins-1hr easy climb.

If you like volcanoes as much as I do, go to White Island. It's a
fantastic experience.

Better known (at least in Lonely Planet) as Whakaari, and the best way
to get there is to fly, about $100 (? my book might be out of date).
Best if anyone has any recent experience to tell us about it.

I wouldn't miss landing on it for nothing. I went there from Whakatane
on a boat tour (there is only one company that does it). They provide
you with all the safety equipment and you go all the way to the crater,
all in all about 2-2.5 hours on the island. I have never seen a stream
of sulphuric acid in my life - but, it's there..

Plus on the way out there is a gannet colony (yes, on the very island)
as good as the one near Napier, and you get to see it as an extra.
