Default LA Sunsets?

Going to be in LA next weekend with a friend who's into sunsets. What are
specific spot do you recommend for a great view of the sun going down over
the ocean? Thanks.

The Getty does seem like a nice place to view the sunset.

I'll suggest Echo Mountain, where the old Mt. Lowe railway used to
terminate, above Alta Dena.

From the Pasadena area, find Lake Avenue and go north until you can go
no further north. Park your car and walk into the park-like opening
in the roadway.. Walk about two miles on a well-defined trail.
You'll gain about 800 feet in total.

When you come across the remains of the railway and hotel, you're
there.

You're actually not particuarly close to the shoreline, but because of
the altitude [about 2000 feet above sea level], the view is
impressive. The sun will sink into the ocean, and, as it drops,
you'll have a bright orange reflection coming off the water and
reflecting the twenty or thirty miles to your vantage point in the San
Gabriel mountains. You'll also have a pretty good chunk of the Los
Angeles basin within view, stretching from Pasadena's Arroyo Seco,
past downtown Los Angeles, past Century City, and clear on out into
the Pacific Ocean and Santa Catalina island. And standing among the
remains of what used to be a resort for the well-to-do, I think the
experience is a unique one.

The hike is a popular one, and it's likely that a google search will
produce numerous descriptions of the hike and how to get to the
trailhead.
