Canada snags top 3 spots in ranking of best cities.

Sunday, October 12, 2003

One of the world's top travel magazines has given a big shout out to Victoria,
Vancouver and Quebec City.

Condé Nast Traveler magazine named Victoria the top city in the Americas, and
Vancouver Island got the nod for the top North American island at the
magazine's annual Reader's Choice awards gala at New York City's Guggenheim
Museum on Friday.

Victoria scored an overall rating of 80.7 out of 100. The city also received a
96 rating for ambience -- second in the world only to Carmel, California.

Vancouver came in second with a score of 79.6 while Quebec City took third for
a Canadian sweep of the top three places.

The cities were rated on numerous criteria including ambience, friendliness,
culture/sites, restaurants, lodging and shopping.

The magazine, with a readership of more than two million, divided cities into
four geographic divisions: the Americas (Canada, Central America and South
America), Asia/Pacific, Africa/Middle East and the United States.

Vancouver Island edged out Cape Breton, N.S., for the best North American
Island.

Cape Breton was second and Kiawah, South Carolina, was third.

In addition, the Vancouver Airport was named the world's No. 3 airport behind
No. 1 Dubai Airport, and No. 2 Kuala Lumpur Airport.

And in the leisure hotels category, the Fairmont Banff Springs hotel in
Alberta came fifth, and Vancouver's Pan Pacific took 20th spot in the Americas
and Caribbean category.

Barbados' Sandy Lane received the top spot, while New York's Four Seasons was
second.

The awards will be featured in Condé Nast Traveler's November issue.

I spent time in Jasper National Park and also some time in British Columbia.
I have to agree, the place will always get my vote.

Good results, but those Canadian winners were in the category of the
"Americas" which pitted Canada against Central and Latin America. All top
Canadian cities scored less than the top American Cities (San Francisco,
New York, Chicago).

Nice try!

Not according to the definition for this survey:

"The magazine, with a readership of more than two million, divided cities
into
four geographic divisions: the Americas (Canada, Central America and South
America), Asia/Pacific, Africa/Middle East and the United States."
