Is tap water safe for drinking without prior boiling or filtering?

Hi,

for Germany: yes.

Here in Munich there once was a publication that tap water is safer for
drinking than mineral water or bottled water.
It comes directly from sources in the mountains.

No!
Don't even wash in European water. There are nearly 380 million people in
the EU all slowly dying of chronic gut and skin infections.
If you come, please bring soap, underarm razors for the wimmin and some
dentists.

Except that managed to process it such that it was no longer safe, and
needed to be withdrawn!

Actually, on a recent trip to the USA I found out that there are several
places in the US where it is definately NOT safe to drink the tap water.

So the question isn't as daft as it seems from someone coming from a
backward country :-)

LOL!
Seriously though, you can find water everywhere that's not *safe* to drink,
if you look hard enough.

There have been outbreaks of cryptosporidium in the US, particularly in
Wisconsin. In Europe I have never seen the horrible white tap water that
I've seen in Michigan and New York.

When I lived in NYC I had a visitor from Germany who kept saying, "But the
water here looks like milk! The German people would never stand for this!"

My tap water in France looks and tastes much better than what used to come
out of my taps in New York. However, if you travel to St. Petersburg in
Russia one day, don't drink the water. The natives boil it and let it sit
overnight before drinking it. The tap water in Barcelona used to be salty,
but I don't know if that's been fixed in recent decades, as last time I was
there I only drank mineral water.

There's a world of difference between "safe" or at least drinkable, and
"nice".
