The one thing I would add to Peter's suggestions below is to be sure and
get a ferry day-pass while in Sydney.

Incredibly good value for your money, you can take a ferry trip to Manly
Beach (recommended) and have terrific views of the bridge and the Opera
House. Ferries go all over the harbour, and it's not only a quick way to
see lots of the harbour, it's got great views going and coming.

YEAH! I used to live in Manly and never tired of the ferry rides.
There's always something goin on in the harbour. Getting a ferry to
Darling Harbour is fun too.

Just a small tip if you decide that you'd like to drive around yourself
which i recommend highly as many people from around the world that drive on
the same side as you in the states (eg.Europe, canada etc) find that after a
day or two you become accustomed to it.

The big thing to remember is that even if you have a limited time to get
everything done, don't plan on getting off the plane from the far side
of the world, picking up a hire car and driving off into a strange city.
This applies even if you are driving on your usual side of the road.

Wait a day or so, get over the jet lag, use buses and taxis, and when
you aren't tired and stressed and rushed, pick up your hire car.

Hook turns, being smeared by a tram if you turn from the middle of the road

For me the trick to remembering to make hook turns in Melbourne was to
pretend I was driving a large truck with a wide turning radius.
