Default Niagara Falls Hotel with good view of falls.

Seeking info on hotels with good view of falls.
Any advice on which hotel to stay, floor level or particular room to
request as long as it does not cost an arm and a leg would be
appreciated.

A lot of info on the net on the latest hotels but they never reveal if
all you see is a falls view 75% cut off by some other tall building.

Thanks,
Harold

The Sheraton Fallsview and the Marriot are both on the hill overlooking
the falls and have lots of rooms facing it. Neither is cheap, but the
tourist business has been slow for the last year or so and there are some
deals available.

We stayed at the Sheraton Fallsview last July. We had a "fallsview"
room w/ the floor-to-ceiling windows facing the falls. The
door/window when open is not for the faint-of-heart/heights. The
rooms were nice but I don't remember the hotel being particularly
memorable. IIRC, I think we paid in the neighborhood of $175-$200 US.
This was over a holiday in the summer, and although it wasn't rack
rate, it was close. Nice view. Good location.

Be aware that Starwood/Sheraton operates two Sheraton's in the area
--- and we found that their 800# is a little sneaky in where they put
you. The two are "Sheraton by the Falls" and "Sheraton Fallsview",
which are of course two different hotels. "Sheraton Fallsview" seems
to be the more popular of the two, and offers slightly lower rates
than "Sheraton by the Falls". "Sheraton by the Falls" isn't on the
"strip" perse, and is located about 1 mile away from the action. I
wouldn't suggest staying here unless you want to do a lot of walking.

I could swear the 800# tries the push the less popular "Sheraton by
the Falls", probably as a result of low occupancy. When both myself
and another couple called(multiple times) to specifically ask
prices/availability for "Sheraton Fallsview", the customer service
agent consistently said, "Why don't you stay at the Sheraton by the
Falls instead?". After the second time, I asked, "Why this one and
not the one located immediately next the action, casino, etc?" She had
no real answer.

Niagara Falls on the whole is overly commercialized, too touristy, etc
Cheap plastic souvenir / t-shirt shops everyplace. Big neon-signs
ala Las Vegas come to mind. If we went again, we would definitely
stay at Niagara-on-the-Lake, and visit Niagara Falls for one day,
rather than the other way around.

Several people suggested we spend more time at Niagara-on-the-lake
before we went, and I really should have listened!
Niagara-on-the-lake is very quaint, nice cafes, shops, etc. The
vineyards are fun to visit as well. It's literally 20 mins? from
Niagara falls.

Hope this helps.

On the whole, it is a tourist location, and tourist flock to that sort of thing. There lots of
other attraction like the butterfly conservatory, greenhouses, school of horticulture. The "tourist
traps" are pretty well limited to three or four streets.

NOTL is nice, but it tends to be a little more expensive. There are great plays at the Shaw Festival
and a number of very nice restaurants restaurants. And the drive there from Niagara Falls is very
nice.

On that hill (where the new casino is opening very soon!) there is the
Sheraton Fallsview, the Marriott and also a Hilton. Are are really nice and
have great views.

Just make sure that you find the right hotel (I think all the chains have
multiple hotels in NF) and make sure you don't go to a 'fallsview' hotel and
then get a room looking at the city.

Most of them have packages too that include breakfasts and dinner. Kids
might like the Hilton a bit more because it has the nicest pool with a fun
waterslide.

Why do you want to sit in your hotel looking at the falls? Go to Goat

The view from your hotel room is more or less like watching the falls
on a video.

Because you have to go to bed sometime. Yes, it is a shame they were
constructed, but they are there and the view from the rooms are fantastic.

While I count myself among those who recent the erection of tall buildings so
close to one of the great natural wonders of the world, I have to admit that
they are not entirely intrusive. If you are walking or driving along the
parkway you are more likely to be looking at the falls that at the buildings
on the top of the hill behind it, though I am sure they mar the view from the
American side. It is a shame that they located the new casino right next to
those hotels. I am sure it will mean lots more business for the hotels, but it
seems such a waste of valuable tourism real estate. The serious gamblers would
be just as happy to have gone a mile or two down the road.

If you're on the American side, you can't miss them. My Italian
husband and I were there last summer and he was horrified that Canada
had allowed such monstrosities to be built so close to the falls. He
said that it was worse than the worst abusive construction he had ever
seen in Italy, and that's saying something. He refused to spend a dime
in Canada in protest.

I think Ontario needs to have a good ecological re-education program
for it's urban planners or whatever they're called. Are they totally
in the pockets of big business?
