Rent a car ($50 or less), and drive along the coast up to the end of the
main road. It will bring you to Kee Beach, which is a beautiful, tourist
free, place to dunk your toes, surf the waves, or swim if your brave.
Along the way, you'll get to see some beautiful views, and cool,
counterculture beach towns.

Mon hilo, hawaii 8:30 AM 6:00 PM

Rent a car, and drive up to Volcanoes National Park. You'll actually
get to walk next to steam vents in the lava. Drive to the area where
the lava actually flows into the ocean.

Tue lahaina (maui), hawaii 7:00 AM --
Wed lahaina (maui), hawaii -- 6:00 PM

Two days in Maui are perfect.

Rent a car, drive to and up Haliakala, a sacred, inactive volcano whose
summit is over 10,000 feet. If you like to bike, there's actually a
tour that takes you up the mountain, where you grab a bike and ride down.

Go to the beach during your second day in Maui. There are many
wonderful beaches on this Island, so take your pick.

Thanks. We appreciate the feedback. Please keep the "must do" ideas coming.

Last time we took a HI land based vacation, we visited the Arizona. We were
planning on revisiting this time!

Depending on the amount of time you might want to spend on any one
excursion:

Hilo: Queen Liliuokalani Gardens; take a tour of Volcanoes National
Park
Kona: Place of Refuge
Lahaina (day 1): Rent a car and go on the Road to Hana. Research and
make sure you hit all the stops on the way where there are beaches,
waterfalls and parks. A friend of mine actually made up a spreadsheet
for this!
Lahaina (day 2): Get up early and go see the sunrise on the summit of
Haaleakala. Take warm clothes, it gets very cold up there.
Lahaina (day 2): If you are there during whale season, tour a whale
watching tour with the Pacific Whale Foundation.

I haven't been to the islands, so I can't help there!

You are The Ghost Host! Let's face it, your charm lies in your voice.
It's commanding...it's sinister...it's attractive...it's disembodied!
You enjoy entertaining and guiding others, but you like to do it on your
own terms, from the shadows. This doesn't seem to bother anyone. In
fact, your dark sense of humor keeps people coming back over and over
for more fun and frivolity!
Please feel free to display the plaque below on your online journal or

remember to upload the image to your OWN servers before you link it (all
you have to do is add your image url to the code!).

Yes! We only had one day and went to Haaleakala; but some shipmates did
the Road to Hana, and reported that it was awesome.

On Maui, the "must do" is visit the top of Haleakala, and visit
Hana. On Hawaii, it depends on what the volcano is doing. If it is
active, you absolutely must get to the best places to see it
doing whatever it is doing. This might involve driving and/or
walking, or paying big bucks for a helicopter. If you've never seen
it in action, pay whatever it takes, even if it maxes out your
credit card. If it is not going, just drive around the island
passing by the volcanoes and take walks on the many trails ...
you really should see things like the lava tunnels. If the volcano
is going, you can see how they are made. The most "beautiful" part
of the big island is just north of Hilo.

What are your choices in Kona? We've spent a bit of time there, but I
don't know what they would be offering as excursions. Lisa

Only have done land based Hawaii vacations. We can get to Honolulu in 5
1/2 hours from Anchorage, non-stop and a little more to Maui.

On Oahu, have always have enjoyed the North Shore. Last time we went we
just went and hung out at the beach and watched them surf and boogie
board, plus the Polynesian Culture Center. This allows you to see the
different Pacific cultures in one place.

On Maui, besides spending time at the beach, taking a whale watching
tour, if the whales are there November - March (always gets me because
these are the whales that winter in Hawaii and summer in Alaska, best of
both worlds)and a visit to the Maui Ocean Center.

Susan in Anchorage
