My wife and I will be driving from Rome to Amalfi in July. Curious as
to how easy it is to make this drive and also the time involved. We
will be renting a car at the Rome airport. Thanks for any input!

Driving is doable, and the road along the Amalfi coast is a great drive if
you have a small, nimble car and a lot of nerve.

Possibly more nerve by bus: parts of the vehicle overhang the edge of the
road.

You do not. Its just a mildly winding road. However from the reactions
you get from some Americans, they are not used to this.

Flying a couple London/New York just once equals
a whole years driving in a medium car in carbon terms.

this one is only wide enough for one car, so steep you can only use
1st gear with foot hard to floor and no barriers

Looks like somewhere in UK. And not particularly dangerous as there is no
precipice to fall hundreds of feet to your certain death. (And is it steeper
than about 1 in 3?)

Not that the Amalfi coast is that challenging in that regard, and no
different from many other routes.

Hardnott pass, its 1 in 3 and yes, you can only fall about 100 feet,
which is enough to kill you.
About 100 times harder to drive than Amalfi.

Really, a hundred times harder? Are there oncoming buses the size of train
cars, and people tailgating, honking, and passing? Tunnels with hairpins on
the blind side? I've driven the Amalfi coast probably 25 or more times and
am not afraid of it, but for a first-timer not from the Alps or Andes, it's
a fright. You keep poo-pooing it. You want someone to roll the window
down, rest their arm on the door and drive one-handed? You want them to die
because you're so brave?

Cut it out.

Yes, inexperienced or poor drivers actually get stuck without the
intervention of other traffic. Its actually quite difficult to have
enough power and traction to make it. If there is ice it has to close
as it becomes impossible. Then add traffic, (which can only be passed
at passing points unlike Amalfi).

because I found it routine with no real hairpins (the sort where you
look out of the side window to see the road). Oncoming buses are
easily dealt with. Tailgating, hooting etc are just norms of Italian
driving.

I'm sure I've done the Hardknott Pass in a minibus, without too much
problem.

BTW both these routes (the pass and the Amalfi coast road) are on Google
Streetview. Looking at the latter, it looks little different from any other
winding main road in Italy.
