Upstate NY input

I've never spent a lot of time in NY state ( other than Niagara Falls on my
way to the west). I'd like to take a 7 ? day drive ... enjoy the scenery,
find some nice places in the Adirondacks, Lake George area etc and looking
for advice, links on where to stay, what to do. Looking for nature related
and historic, or scenic drives - no mountain climbing ! Next week , next
month is good.

We'll be leaving from Boston, MA area so (skipping the NYC visit) could go
RT 84 then thru Nyack then UP to start. Or Rt 90 . Then on return thru
VT/NH to get home. Or reverse. Looking for advice on weather also. Too early
now - wait until ... ? Are the vacation area places open for rent yet /soon
? Stay in a motel ? or "stay at this hotel" ? Also appreciate any little
restaurants to get ... breakfast... or whatever their specialty is.
