Default Planning a Trip -

From Kansas to Alaska. Via Mt. Rushmore & Yellowstone. Spend some time
in Denali & Anchorage. Ferry back to Juneau and then on
to Bellingham, WA.

Few days in Seattle area then south along the coast highways with a
side trip along the Columbia River. Will head east at San Francisco,
cut through Utah to the 4 corners then to Durango, CO and then back to
Kansas.

No RV, just me & better half in a SUV.

Advice? Warnings? Must sees? Good places to stay, eat or whatever?

Thanks in advance.

We planned a similar trip once. It didn't happen for unfortunate reasons,
but I would suggest that you continue with BC Ferries down to Vancouver
Island. This will take you through the Inside Passage, which is truly
spectacular. It will also let you relax for a few days instead of driving,
and likely save money too. We flew up that route once in a small commuter
plane from Victoria to the Queen Charlottes, and even from the air the
scenery was phenomenal.

The ferries land at Nanaimo, and you can continue your journey by driving to
Victoria and getting the ferry down to Seattle, which is another wonderful
trip through the San Juan islands. Victoria is an attractive small city,
too. and worth at least a few hours to visit. The car ferry takes you to
the Olympic Peninsula, so you have the option of driving that wonderful
coastline if you want to avoid Seattle for some reason.

I'd do both myself. Go into Seattle for a day or two, then back around
Olympic Nat'l Park. It's another outrageously scenic area, with a wild
coastline up north, and the beach highway at Ocean Shores (drive on the
sand). Along the way are mountains and temperate rain forests, native
Indian settlements, lots of crafts for sale, and the distances aren't great
at all. If it's warm, the beaches at Ocean Shores are wonderful, and the
surf is usually pretty gentle.

As for food, I can't recommend specific places, but eat fish. Even the
sidewalk variety of smoked salmon is good, and halibut is native to the
waters and sold fresh. King and Queen crab are available, as are the native
'razor' clams. I'm sure we've eaten other things in the area, but the
seafood is memorable.

Google the Denali Park first if you intend to go soon. When attending a
convention in Anchorage in late September/early October, I was surprised to
learn that a lot of the park shuts down around the third week in September.
Don't think you can take an RV into the park, but I could be wrong on that.
No private cars, for sure.
