Better come to New York City I've spent a fair amount of time in Florida, and I wouldn't think of visiting there without renting a car, although Miami may be the one exception. Beaches, but no theme park to my knowledge. In Miami Beach South Beach IS the theme park. Whats in NY in terms of theme parks - i mean if i am in NY city how far is NJ? How many theme parks are accessible? I prefer NY as we can spend all week checking out touristy things... how can i persuade my friend that NY is the way? You haven't mentioned your budget. Some hotels in Orlando Fl can be very expensive. The theme parks themselves are not cheap. A subway ride from New York City will take you to Coney Island, where it all started. Everything that Theme Parks offer on a grand scale started at Coney Island. Personally, I don't see the attraction of theme parks. As they go Six Flags in Jackson, NJ is pretty good and not as expensive as the ones in Orlando. Along with the prerequisite thrill rides there's a Safari Park (rented car or private auto needed) there's also a water park and rock or rap concerts on certain nights. While a Florida vacation may not be marred by bad weather do keep in mind that September puts you in hurricane season. Hurricanes are more likely to hit Florida from the end of June through the end of October. I've stayed in Ft. Lauderdale the last week of October. I had sunny days all week long. I don't want to scare you off. You just need to be aware of the weather. Have a "Plan B" in the event you have a hurricane mar your time in Florida. I suppose, if you want to convince your friend not to go to Florida, you can play up the hurricane season issue. Just be sure to do a little research so you can answer his questions with facts. Alternatives from New York: Make a day trip by train up the Hudson Canyon. Once you get away from NYC, the Hudson can offer lots of photo opportunities. It's surrounded by scenic mountains. Take a Day Bus to Atlantic City. Do some swimming, see a show, loose some change and maybe win some. The Casinos are like mini-theme parks. Trump Taj Mahal, The Riverboat all have a theme throughout. Some even have piers with amusement rides. Time things right and you might get to see the Miss America Parade. The Beauty Pageant is usually held in Atlantic City sometime in September. Take a bus to The Meadowlands - do some Outlet Shopping (no sales tax on most things in New Jersey). Maybe see a sports event at the Meadowlands Sports Complex. You can do these excursions, that is if you have time between checking out the East Village Scene, Tribeca, SoHo, Greenwich Village, South Street Seaport, Chinatown, Little Italy, Chelsea, Off-off Broadway Theater, Midtown, the Upper Eastside, Park Avenue, The Upper Westside, Gramercy, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Guggenheim, The Frick, Central Park, The Museum of Modern Art, The Museum of Natural History, The Imax Theater, The Brooklyn Bridge, Tavern On The Green at Night, The Jewish Museum, The Museum of African American Art, The George Washington Bridge, The New York Subway, The Staten Island Ferry, Liberty Island and Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Radio City and the Rockettes (if performing), Fort Tryon & The Cloisters, Bowling Green, Wall Street - that's just naming a few attractions. -- ________ To email me, Edit "xt" from my email address. Getting back to New York, Coney Island is a good idea. Great view from the top of the Wonder Wheel, and for those who like rollercoasters, there's the Cyclone. I happen to hate rollercoasters. [laugh] If you really want to go to a theme park, have a look at the links on this page: http://dir.yahoo.com/Regional/U_S__S...d_Theme_Parks/ Or make enquiries at rec.roller-coaster. There is a beach and boardwalk that connects Coney Island to the neighborhood known as Brighton Beach. that doesnt look hardcore enough - we want somwhere that has rides similar to Alton towers in the UK but bigger and scarier! Six Flags has one is Darien Lake, Buffalo - how far is that from the main area of NY? I mean that has ride like Superman which look awesome. what other large theme park companies are there in the USA? |

Six Flags has one is Darien Lake, Buffalo - how far is that from the main area of NY? Far, maybe 4 hours. The Jersey Location is better. There is also one outside Washginton DC. Busch Gardens, Tampa Florida and Williamsburg, Virginia is a possiblity. They have "Hardcore" rides. Paramount Kings Dominion in Central Virginia (near Richmond) is good, but loses on your driving requirement. You would pretty much have to drive. I think that if you're looking for Scary Rides, I'd tend toward these rather than the Disney parks.
