Default California on Friday.

I'm flying to LA on Friday for two weeks and will be meeting an old school
friend. She has given me her home and work telephone numbers and when I call
her I'd like to be able to give her a number to contact me on. As I'll be
travelling around a lot I'd like to use a mobile but I don't want to pay the
outrageous call charges of my own UK network. So my question, finally, is
can I buy such a thing as a Pay and Go SIM in the US?

Thanks.

Yes, depending on the phone you have.

Thanks.

Do you mean to work with your existing phone? You'd need
to check the company you use now to see if some kind of
special plan is available when travelling overseas. If you
mean a brand-new phone with a prepaid plan you'd use just
while in the U.S., yes, there are several companies that
do that. You buy a starter package for maybe $50 or
$100 that contains a wireless phone and a card with some
minutes. After you activate the phone you can use it and
you purchase more time as you need it. Of course you pay
a lot more using a plan like that, maybe 25 cents a minute,
but it could be convenient if you don't expect to make a lot
of calls and don't want to sign up for a monthly plan.

Or he can just use his own phone and have a sim card inserted, providing his
phone works on US networks. If he has a tri-band phone that should work.

Ask the hotel where you are staying if they have voice mail. Then when
you are away from your room you can retrieve messages from the voice mail.

Alternatively, Virgin Phone and similar pay-as-you-go cell phones can
be obtained at Best Buy, Staples, Target and similar stores.

Yes, depending on the phone you have.

It's a Nokia 6600 (tri-band)

Aren't hotel phone charges outrageous though?

Is it possible to just buy a pay as you go SIM card though, you can get them
readily enough in the UK for a reasonable price. My phone is not locked to
any network and it's tri-band so I'd prefer to use it if possible.

Thanks.

old school solution: if it is solely a question of money, a phone card,
hotel phones and pay phones should allow sufficient contact.
