What is the present situation with hostels? Are they teeming with teens, or

All sorts, depends on the hostel, obviously some hostels are very
youth orientated (more early 20's than teens) but others have more of
a mix.

I have always stayed at official HI hostels in the U.S.
and Europe and have found people of all ages.

Some non-official hostels have reputations as party places
where anything goes so you just have to check these out
individually. Older people are not likely to favor the
noise and party scene, while for many younger folk it is just
what they are looking for.

German Youth Hostels in the summer have lots of school groups. LOTS. That
said in Berlin in July there was a healthy mix. Otherwise I've always
found a healthy mix.

In Bavaria lots of kids.
