Default What's a good part of NYC to stay in?

Close to nightlife, but not too expensive ( $200/night), and safe?

Are those mutually exclusive conditions?

Not at all. I don't think there's any area of Manhattan where you can't find
a hotel in that price range lest the area be completely devoid of hotels.
While some people here suggest otherwise I've always stayed in midtown, last
time was a couple blocks south of the park, it was a nice hotel that was
well within your price range and that was in the early summer.

If you're talking about staying the night of Dec 31 you'll probably find
that prices are horribly inflated but if there's not much going on then you
shouldn't have any trouble.

You will be minutes from nightlife in any part of Manhattan
you choose to stay in. Nightlife is not limited to one area
of the city. And the city is safe, no problems there. If you
do nightlife into the wee hours, you might be wise to take a
taxi home, especially if you have nightlifed it up a bit, but
other than that nothing to concern yourself about, period.
You didn't define what you mean by nightlife, but I presumed you
meant bars and clubs? The theater, of course, is centered in
Midtown around Times Squre, but there are other theater venues
around the city as well. I think more clubs are located downtown
from Times Square, but I'm not really up on that scene.
Good restaurants abound in all parts of Manhattan. Many clubs
are and bars are located in the East and West Villages, Soho and
Tribeca. But you will have a better choice of hotels at decent
prices if you don't limit yourself to one area of the city when
searching.

Most any part of Manhattan these days is relatively safe. Your safety
is never guaranteed anywhere, but it's nothing to worry about if you
keep your wits about yourself and keep your wallet in your front
pocket at all times.

If I were you, I'd look into the possibility of accomodations south of
14th St. Good bars in the Village and East Village.

Not at all. I've previously recommended the Murray Hill area, which is
quiet enough but close to everything. Very roughly speaking, it's
between 20th and 35th Streets, around Park Avenue and a block or two east
or west. There seem to be plenty of hotels in your price range there, and
I've always enjoyed staying there.

The Upper West Side is a bit livelier, but I'm not so familiar with the
hotels around there.
