Three Sue Carnival Cruise Line Over Compensation

(CBS) LOS ANGELES The Carnival cruise line was sued Tuesday in federal
court in Los Angeles by three workers who claim they were unfairly
denied overtime despite low wages that for one plaintiff equaled about
$1.60 per day.

The suit, which seeks class-action status, alleges Carnival Corp.'s on-
ship employees are required to work more than 70 hours per week.

Hours beyond 70 are classified as "extra overtime," but employees only
receive compensation for those hours if their position doesn't give
them a chance to earn tips from passengers, the suit states.

The plaintiffs allege Carnival's compensation practices violate the
federal Seaman's Wage Act, and that the company has also failed to
comply with the overtime laws of Panama and the Bahamas for cruise
ships registered in those countries.

No one at Miami-based Carnival could be reached Tuesday to comment on
the suit, which seeks back wages and penalties, among other relief.

The plaintiffs, Diane Wood, Jose Luis Castillo and Petronela
Sajterova, have worked on Carnival cruise ships that sailed into the
Los Angeles and Long Beach ports, among other U.S. harbors, the suit
states.
