Default Will Travel Insurance pay for missed flights?

As I have just posted I will be flying to India in the not too distant
future. I have been thinking about taking out travel insurance for
this trip but am not too sure if it will cover a claim due to the
following circumstances:-
Initially I will be landing in Calcutta and then changing planes from
Royal Jordanian to Indian Airlines and flying onto my final
destination. What I am worried about is that on the return journey if
the Indian Airline flight is cancelled or delayed(happens a lot I'm
told) I may miss the continental flight back to the UK. If this
happens then rearranging to get an alternative flight(to England) will
be difficult and I may have to book a ticket with whoever has seats
available(probably BA) thus incurring an extra payout.
So will normal travel insurance cover all the extra expenses?

You have to look at the small print (or ask the underwriter) for this. Some
policies cover such eventualities only for outbound flights from UK. You
want one to cover for return flights as well. Also some credit/charge cards
give free cover for travel inconvenience for failed connections etc. to a
certain limit if your ticket was charged to the card.

You have to check with the insurance carrier, many have lots of conditions
as to the length of the delay, length of connection, etc before they will
cover.

I read into this that you are flying on two separate tickets, rather than on
a single itinerary from UK to India and back. If so, you can't insure
against missing your connection from Indian to Royal Jordanian. If it is a
"through ticket" then Indian Airlines would be responsible for getting you
home.

It certainly can be insured.

Anything can be insured.

The only issue is the price.

You are right about the 2 separate tickets. I do hope you are wrong
about travel insurance not covering in this case. I had better start
calling round the insurance companies to see if anyone does.

The main hurdle is that these flights appear to be on 2 separate tickets -
this also means that neither airline is responsible if you should miss
the connection. They may be nice and rebook you, but they fall under no
obligation to do so.

Travel insurance in general doesn't cover connecting flights like this,
unless you have left plenty of time between the sectors. I'd say make
sure you have at least 3 hours on top of the normal connecting and check
in time, and you should be okay. (If the flight is delayed more than
that, they'll probably be making arrangements for passengers anyway.)

Check with your credit card provider as well. I know Amex give some cover
for scenarios like this.

Hilary

I may even fly in a day beforehand if I can't get hold of any suitable
insurance.
Thanks to all who have taken an interest.

They will be sticky about the amount of time allowed. generally they
require for instance on interline transfers in the US 90 minimum
connection or no coverage (that is same airline connection). Your
mileage will vary but follow a similar pattern.
