Default New York lodging question

Hi there,

I'll be at NYC for three days at the end of April. My hotel budget is $100
per night, but I can't find any rooms with private bath available on those
dates.

So I'm thinking on either the Days Inn or Super 8 hotels at North Bergen,
NJ. On the Expedia maps they are less than two miles away from the Lincoln
tunnel to Manhattan. My question is how complicated is to travel to/from
midtown Manhattan. Is there a subway to North Bergen? Is the Lincoln tunnel
a traffic jam so cabs would be too expensive? What do you recommend? So many
questions I know...

Thanks for any advice,

-Benton

Bus to Port Authority, but of course how long the trip takes depends
on traffic.

Is there a subway to North Bergen?

The subway exists only within the city limits of New York.

Is the Lincoln tunnel

Cabs from New Jersey would be very expensive because you'd presumably
have to pay double the fare.

What do you recommend?

[snip]

I recommend that you call YMCAs and so forth and stay in New York.
North Bergen is a town of some merit, but for you to stay there for
three days and commute into New York via buses doesn't seem reasonable
to me.

I have stayed at the Days Inn in N. Bergen many times in the past. Be
sure to have a reservation in advance. You used to be able to walk
across the highway to the Port Authority Bus Terminal, but they blocked
the street (too much traffic and very dangerous) so now you must drive.
Parking is $8 a day (or at least was a year or so ago). That also
includes your bus transportation to and from. Additional persons pay
something like $4. Depending on traffic, it takes about 10 minutes to
get into NY to the Bus Terminal on 42nd St., about 2 blocks from Times
Square. It is best to only return at bedtime. There are no great
restaurants or nightlife near the hotel. I have gone to plays and
returned at 11 p.m. with no trouble. The buses run about every 20
minutes of so until after midnight.

Just in case you wanted to know, you can also park there longer than one
day and will be charged $8 for each when you leave the lot. I have done
this when I stayed at the Americana Hotel in NY and didn't want to take
a car into town.

There are other hotels in N. Bergen. One is called the Palace Hotel,
right next door. I have also stopped to ask at a few others that I
wouldn't recommend. (Dirty and charged by the hour.)

Hope this helps. Travlr

Which nearby towns to NYC do the commuter rail lines serve,
and what sort of frequency/cost are they? Is there a
web-site for these?

TIA

Go to www.biddingfortravel.com. You will be able to find information about
lodging that meets your needs for under $100; and then go to Priceline or
Hotwire to purchase.

There are PATH trains and New Jersey Rail to towns in
New Jersey, Long Island Railroad to towns on Long Island
and Metro North to upstate towns in New York and to
towns in Connecticut.

The thing you need to think about is balancing the cost of
a hotel room in Manhattan against the inconvenience of travel
outside the city. Seeing New York City is tiring. Most people
like to sightsee and then go back to their hotels and rest a
bit and freshen up before the evening begins. This is hard to
do when staying outside the city. And will diminish your
enjoyment. You will have to pay for this transportation as well
as for transportation within the city. The latter can be handled
cheaply by Metro cards for uunlimited bus and subway travel. But
if you have to rent a car or pay for train or bus in addition,
you might well be able to put out a bit more for a hotel room in
Manhattan.

We have gone over all this in this group many times. Most of us
New Yorkers in the group advise staying in the city itself.

It is not a matter of lack of transportation from Manhattan to
towns outside. There is plenty of that. Most of us would prefer
not to have to deal with it as a tourist in the city.

Thanks for the answer. My question was slightly different to
the OP.

I am considering car rental from Buffalo-Philadelphia and
was toying with the idea of staying in the 'burbs and
parking the car at a motel for a couple of nights while we
drop in on NYC. Mainly because I have no wish to drive in
Manhattan traffic.

We stayed at the Millennium on Broadway last time for three
nights, so I generally agree with you, but the situation
here is different.

So, if you were looking for a pleasant commute of under an
hour from a motel - or a parking garage - somewhere west of
the Hudson - where would you stay?

The rail lines to suburbs in New York and Connecticut are operated by the
Metro-North Commuter Railroad and the Long Island Rail Road (but you
probably won't be staying on Long Island). Both are part of the
Metropolitan Transportation Authority http://www.mta.info/.

Most rail lines in New Jersey are operated by New Jersey Transit
http://www.njtransit.com/. The Port Authority of New York and New
Jersey http://www.panynj.gov/ operates the PATH (Port Authority
Trans-Hudson), which is similar to the NY subway, and connects Manhattan
to Hoboken, Jersey City and Newark NJ.

Sometimes people here have suggested staying in a hotel/motel in Jersey
City and taking PATH from the Pavonia/Newport station into Manhattan. Do
a Google Groups search on "Jersey City" in this group and you'll probably
turn up some info.

I prefer to stay in Westchester County just North of the City
(New Rochelle, White Plains, Scarsdale, Tarrytown) and use
Metro-North trains, since they arrive at Grand Central, which
besides the cachet, is well positioned in relation to other sights.
Yet next, I'm staying near JFK and renting a car to drive to the
Bronx Zoo for the day! =R=
