Would be very grateful for any advice. Many Thanks M Rowlands Hi, Im from SA originally, mozzies there have become very resillient against prophilactics. I believe Malarone is still effective, along with another Quinine variant. However, the drugs are quite toxic, use ONLY as prescribed. If you dont, they not only become ineffective, but worst of all mask a positive test for malaria if you do contract it and go to a doctor. Best to see your healthpractitioner, as they will need to be prescribed. Any over-the-counter drugs are best avoided, they only give you a false sense of security. Check out this site for background. ]http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dpd/parasites/malaria/factsht_malaria_dr- ugs.htm[/url] I still believe prevention is the best cure in th ecase of malaria..ie wear long sleeves and trousers at dusk, invest in mozzie repellant etc. Citrus oil is a good mozzie repellant. Dont rely solely on drugs, it can be misleading. Ive been to the Kruger Park many times, Swaziland a few times as well, and no problems even though I didnt take any prophilactics. If you are bitten, make sure you get to a doctor if you feel flu-like symptoms, and insist on a malaria test. If you do and its picked up early, no problems, you get a quinine treatment and youll be fine. If you leave it and get full blown malaria, you may be in trouble. Like I said though, ive been there many times and had no problems, just take sensible precautions. Enjoy the bush! -- Posted via http://britishexpats.com |

But other than the wonderful double-meaning, the rest was good advice. A milligram of prevention is worth a kilogram of cure. --riverman (and that goes for the other thing, too) |
