Christmas in Hong Kong

Hi All,

After failing to get any flights at all to Singapore,
I've booked Hong Kong (4 nights) and Penang (7 nights)
instead, and I think I was lucky to get that.

So, I'm asking the same question about a different place.
What's Hong Kong like over Christmas with regards to
weather, shops/restaurants/tailors etc being open/closed.
And again, does the MRT run? Does it still smell (The city,
not the MRT) and is there much humidity at that time of year

(I've been to HK before, but it was in September, and very
humid, and also pre China. (1996))

Good weather. Christmas is a shopping holiday, everything will be open. If
you think the city smells, better stay home in your hygienic shopping mall.

The weather in Hong Kong is great over the chritmas period, sweaters at
night and sleeves during the day. The sun shines pretty much all the
time. The MTR (Mass transit Railway) would stay open during a nuclear
attack- it will be business as usual there, as it will be for the rtest
of Hong Kong. There is a strong Christian population here, but it is
mostly Buddhist/Tin Hau etc. A good thing about the shopping at that
time of year is that most places have their sales!

As for tailors, you would be better going up to Shenzen, get up there
early, get to a tailor just over the border, measure and choose
material, spend the day shopping and wandering around Shenzen/Guangzhou
and pick up your tailored clothes in the evening before taking the
KCR/MTR back to Hong Kong (35 minutes and $3.50 later)

Actually we have one come from Shenzen to our office in Wanchai, Hong
Kong, with swatches. He measures us up and comes back a few days later
for fitting, then a few days after that for final try ons. If we give
him shirts, trousers, jackets etc, he copies them. i could get his
contact for you but he only speaks Putonghua (Mandarin).

If you don't have a HK identity card, multiple entry China visa etc.
it's going to cost HKD150 for a 5 day single-entry Shenzhen SEZ-only
visa at the border (most Western nationalities, no photos required).
It can be slow or fairly quick (go upstairs after passing through HK
exit formalities).

How good can a tailored suit be with only one fitting? Last time I had
one made I had 3 fittings (and I suggest leaving time so you don't
have to settle for something that's not perfect). I think the fitting
where they hang the partially assembled suit on you is especially
critical because things are easy to fix at that point. Any suggestions
as to tailors in Shenzhen? Price range?
