We are going on the Carnival Paradise on 1/4/04 and will be in La
Romana, Dominican Republic. I can't find anything about this place.
Money is tight, so does anyone have suggestions on what we can do
there without going on the ship tours? We have snorkeling gear and we
are in pretty good shape and like pretty much anything. Thanks in
advance for any advice.

If you want to do some sight-seeing, visit Altos de Chavon. Very lovely
views. If you go into town, visit the Ferreteria Romana (it's a store). My
wife's aunts own and run it so spend a few bucks there please, LOL.

As for snorkeling, you can probably go to the beach at Casa de Campo.

There didn't seem to be a whole lot around the dock for tourists and
the shore excursions for $80 so we chose to stay on the ship in the
Dominican Republic.

We enjoyed watching the local activity with our binoculars from the
sports deck. There was a pick up softball game going on and activity
with boats.

Can't be of much more help.

I was just there last week while on Oceania Cruises' Regatta. One
interesting place to go is Altos de Chavon, a recreated 16th century
Mediterranean-style village, complete with cobble streets and amphitheater,
lots of shops, art galleries, and lovely gardens. Scenery is gorgeous. You
can get a 10-passenger taxi/van at the pier to take you there and back for
$30 flat rate--the driver stays with you for safety purposes. The driver
will also take you shopping in La Romana for a negotiated fee; prices there
are lower and, again, the driver is required to stay with you. The Dominican
Republic is NOT the place to wander off on your own.

The Casa de Campo resort complex has (reportedly) beautiful beaches;
however, you probably won't be able to get in there... it's very exclusive
and they don't allow anyone who isn't staying there or participating in an
organized tour to enter. We tried without success. Tours offered by our ship
that included entry to Casa de Campo were horseback riding and kayaking.

My advice... get a driver and see Altos de Chavon and shop downtown. Do your
snorkeling in another port.

Perhaps a review?

(I just told Tim this morning that Oceania is on my short list)

I don't know about Carnival, but Celebrity had a free shuttle bus to
both Altos de Chavon and the marina area, which was convenient, and
cheap My favorite price....free! So both were worth a free look around.

Regatta review is being posted as written, beginning at
http://cruisediva.com/regatta_diary.htm -- parts 1, 2, and 3 are complete
(with photos) and part 4 is almost ready to go up.

OMG... the food on the ship!!! To die for!

Sorry for the delay, but the holidays and a nasty sinus infection have
gotten in the way!
