About Shanghai
Shanghai, also called "Hu" for short in Chinese. It's the largest city
in China filled with colors, vigor and mystery. Among various kinds of flowers, the white magnolia is luckly selected to be the city flower. It belongs to the few spring flowers in Shanghai, and it's in full blossom in early spring, which usually falls on April 5th. It has large, white petals and its eye always looks towards the sky, which symbolizes the pioneering and enterprising spirit. Shanghai is divided into 15 districts and 5 counties. Dotted with many rivers and lakes, it's known for its rich water resources. And most of the rivers are tributaries of the Huangpu River, which is regarded as our mother river. It winds thru the downtown area of the city and it's never frozen. Try to enjoy its beauty and feel its tender while you're walking along the bund… At the present, the city's service industry shows a growing part of the city's economy. Tourism has become to be one of the key sectors. With a pleasant northern subtropical maritime monsoon climate, Shanghai enjoys four distinct seasons, generous sunshine and abundant rainfall, which helps to promote the development of tourism in Shanghai by its weather's superiority. Well, of course, the policy of opening and reforming over the past 20 years has injected the city a lot with new vitality. Many landmark cultural facilities have been boasted, such as the waterfront Oriental Pearl TV Tower in Pudong, Shanghai Grand Theatre and Shanghai Museum in People's Square, and the new Shanghai Library on Huaihai Road. Outdoor concerts and performances at the Bund and other public areas have also composed unique scenes in the city's cultural life. And with the policy of opening wider to the outside world, more than half of the world's top 100 industrial companies have been attracted and invested here. Thus the city is becoming more and more like a big melting pot with a population largely made up of migrants. And that also has led to the development of the city's colourful culture. Now Shanghai is boasting a large number of celebrated artists and performing troupes for its regularly hosting some international TV, film and art festivals. And these events have drawn many domestic and overseas participants and brought an abundance of high-quality programmes. Not only from Hongkong, Taiwan, but many world-class musicians and artists have been come to show themselves in Shanghai. Well, for instance, on Thursday the world-famous female singer Maria Carey will perform the additional vocal recital in Shanghai Soccer Field, which is her first time to show herself in China. While the city attracts people at home and abroad like a magnet, Shanghai's international tourism industry is now thriving. People come here for its culture, its history, its people and all the vigor and vitality it shows in its rush to international metropolis status. And the city has opened more than 30 tourism routes and boasts more than 400 scenic spots. Well, like a pearl set in the west coast of the Pacific Ocean, Shanghai is the showcase of China's fast growth and a bonanza of tourist attractions, business opportunities and cultural activities. Today's Shanghai is designed with the aim of letting more people all over the world have a better understanding of Shanghai, especially of its current developments. Shanghai, my hometown---welcome any frinend of all corners of the land, welcome, welcome to Shanghai! |
