Default NZ itenarary -- Crazy?? Workable??

Hi all,
My girlfriend and I are headed to NZ in a couple of days and after
reading the posts here, I was wondering if our itenarary is a little
ambitious. Unfortunately, we only have 10 days to see middle earth.

Day 1: Auckland
Day 2: Fly into Wellington
Day 3: Cross over to Picton, Drive to Christchurch

This is a full day's drive if you stopm to do just a couple of things. Lunch
at a waterfront hotel is nice at Kiakora (sp?) I refer to a tourist map of
NZ that has driving times as well this leg = 5 hours
Day 4: Take TranzAlpine to Greymouth, Drive to Fox Glacier

Another full day - pushing it really. Not sure if you can take your car on
the train...could drive it, just as good from our experience.4h10min drive
all the way (but I think longer)

DAy 5: Hike Fox Glacier

We walked to the terminus of FJ, as Fox was closed when we were there.

Day 6: Drive to Queenstown

This is a BIG day's drive. Too much in a way if you want to stop and do some
of the short walks (of which there are many) along the way. 6.5 hours
Day 7: Queenstown - Milford / Doubtful

Can be done, but rushed - will be drive, dash to the cruise, back to the
car and back to Q'town. You could stay in Te Anau and do the gloworms cave
tour (very good). My map say 5 hours each way.

Day 8: Queenstown
Day 9: Drive Queenstown - Christchurch

Another big days drive!! 7.15 plus time for lots of traffic...

Day 10: Christchurch to Auckland
Which one is better Fox or Franz Josef?

Can you fly direct to Christchurch? That might save you a day that you can
spend sightseeing. Maybe miss the picton leg and focus on the sthn half.

Your itinery is based on hiring a car? Driving a camper would be pushing it.
Remember that distances and driving times have a WHOLE different
relationship in NZ - winding roads, scenery that begs! to be appreciated.

Hi,

I've been doing a lot of research on an NZ driving itinerary myself (see
"Sanity Check" post).

If it's not too late, you may want to consider flying from Auckland to
Christchurch. You would miss Wellington, the ferry crossing and
Kaikoura...but you would gain about 2 days to pad the rest of your trip.

Day 7: Queenstown - Milford / Doubtful

As someone already said, this will be a long day if you do not plan to
spend the night in Te Anau or take an overnight cruise.

Day 9: Drive Queenstown - Christchurch

Another long driving day (8 hrs?) depending on your route. You could
break it up so that you spend a night in either Mt Cook or Dunedin along
the way.

Good luck, whatever you decide, you'll still have a wonderful time!
