"Peter D" [email protected] wrote in message ... Do you know, Miki, that this is the sort of reasoning used to silence opposition to Hitler in the early 30s? I'm always cautious of anyone who would seek to silence others on the basis that their speech is "unpatriotic" or "abuses freedom of speech". Liberal Icon FDR also put newspapermen and other dissenters in detention. Are you going to compare him to Hitler as well? |

I'm always cautious of anyone who would seek to silence others on the basis that their speech is "unpatriotic" or "abuses freedom of speech". The "abuse" is to attempt to silence them with such words and sentiments. I hope yo see the important distinction, but I think you won't. HI Peter D -- It's been a long time.....hope all is well. I am not seeking to silence anyone. I, personally, do not support President Bush, and I think he has done damage to his Party......it's not necessary to call the President an "idiot" in order to demonstrate freedom of speech. I am very well aware of the situation with Hitler in the 30's. Miki |

......it's not necessary to call the President an "idiot" It's not very polite to call *anyone* an idiot. But by doing so you don't damage anything but your own reputation, because people might have thought you were a polite person up to that very moment. Whoever that 'anyone' might be. There are more appropriate expressions to characterize a person's competence or character. And using these is not damaging to a nation either. Jochen |

In every war, enemy combatants are rountinely held until hostilities cease. That is not true. The hearings to determine whether or not they were enemy combatants took place at Gitmo, not before they arrived. Besides, what right does the US have to invade a foreign country and determine who is a legal combatant. It is ironic that they can identify an enemy force and attack it and then say the people they attacked were not legal combatants. The have a rendition program to ship people to third countries where they may be tortured. Egyptians were sent to Egypt, and Saudis to Saudi Arabia, as in they were sent home. How about a Canadian citizen who was en route from Tunisia to Canada with a stopover in the US being sent to Jordan and from there to Syria? He wasn't sent home. After enduring torture in Syria he was released and sent back to Canada, and is still on the No Fly list. They are arbitrarily placing people's names on no fly lists. Some errors have occurred, but would rather have terrorists riding on American Airlines with your family? So much for the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. No. Not every major intelligence agency thought that. Those that did were swayed by "intelligence" provided by the US, and the administration has admitted that they acted on the basis of faulty intelligence. One of the Iraqi generals who was supposed to have provided information defected years before the invasion. Let us not forget that the Mossad, while effective in accomplishing what it wants, is not beyond lying to help Israeli interests. |
