I heard a rumor that many pubs close at 11pm in London? Is that really
true? In the USA it varies from state to state but is generally
somewhere between 1am and 3am.

Hmm....that reminds me. In England, is it 11pm or 23:00?

We are still trying to shake off the emergency legislation
introduced in WW1! Many pubs in central London will be open later
but 11.00 pm is still the general normal closing hour.(You can
call it 23:00 too but 11 is usual).

And a few pubs in the City of London catering more or less exclusively
to office workers close as early as 9pm.

Alot (not all) of people here love to just slam down beers quick. Beer
is not considered a sipping drink like wines are. Is that not the case
in Europe?

A lot of best real beers are much stronger than american beers.
Slamming back Theakston's Old Peculiar or Speckled Hen
will lead to unfortunate consequences

OTOH, most everyday beers {for example Young's Ordinary, Deuchars IPA,
Greene King IPA) are, at between 3 and 4 percent ABV, considerably
weaker than Anheuser-Busch Bud (5 percent); they do, however, have a
great deal more flavour. Perhaps the low strength is indeed related to
Brits' liking to drink large volumes of beer?

You're picking beers at the weak end of brewers ranges there. But
I think you are right in that they are suited to an evenings
drinking in a pub. Drunk driving is also an issue.

and at weekends, but that is about demand, not rules.

Um, beer is a cold, malty-bitter drink with froth on top. Grog is hot
water with rum in it. Quite a difference, in my view.

"cool" and no froth! :-)
