Speak Ebonics? DEA is looking for translators

Speak Ebonics? You may have a future at the Drug Enforcement
Administration. Yes, academics and culture warriors may argue
endlessly over the merits of "black English" as a subject to be taught
or whether it is a separate language. But the DEA has little doubt
about its usefulness. The federal agency has put out a request for
linguists who are fluent in "Ebonics."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pidgin

"A pidgin (pronounced /ˈpɪdʒɪn/) language is a simplified language that
develops as a means of communication between two or more groups that do
not have a language in common. It is most commonly employed in
situations such as trade, or where both groups speak languages different
from the language of the country in which they reside (but where there
is no common language between the groups). Fundamentally, a pidgin is a
simplified means of linguistic communication, as is constructed
impromptu, or by convention, between groups of people. A pidgin is not
the native language of any speech community, but is instead learned as a
second language.[1][2] A pidgin may be built from words, sounds, or
body language from multiple other languages and cultures. Pidgins
usually have low prestige with respect to other languages.[3]"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patois

"Patois (English pronunciation: /ˈpætwɑː/, pl. /ˈpætwɑːz/[1][2]) is any
language that is considered nonstandard, although the term is not
formally defined in linguistics. It can refer to pidgins, creoles,
dialects, and other forms of native or local speech, but not commonly to
jargon or slang, which are vocabulary-based forms of cant. Class
distinctions are embedded in the term, drawn between those who speak
patois and those who speak the standard or dominant language used in
literature and public speaking, i.e., the "acrolect"."

When I first saw this I thought it was ridiculous but it isn't. They
need to know what the drug dealers and criminals are saying on
wiretaps.
