reasonable priced hotel in Rome

A group of adults will be traveling to Rome for 2 days in late Oct and we
are looking for a reasonable priced hotel where we can get to see some of
the famous sites of Rome. We are not real demanding but we do want a safe,
clean and a room with a bathroom in it. We would like to walk to some of
the things like the Trivi Fountain, the Spanish steps etc if possible or
close to a train station that will take us to them.
Thank you. for your help. A good 2 *or a 3* would be good. We will need 6
double rooms.

I know of a few centrally located hotels that are reasonably priced
and well kept. The one I use most is:

One problem is that this is a fairly small hotel, as are many other
reasonably priced and centrally located hotels. Six rooms may be a
problem, so try as soon as possible. This and many other small hotels
also don't have elevators.

Click on "Find hotels on map" and then choose one of the central
neighborhoods shown. The best neighborhoods for being near the various
places you want to see are Trevi, Pantheon, Navona and Colosseo/Foro
Romano. From these areas, you can walk almost everywhere. However, any
area within the central circle is fairly convenient. Parts of the
Repubblica, Marsala and Esquilino areas are a bit grungy, but unless
you're out very late at night they're not unsafe. Keep your belongings
well under control and your eyes wide open in any large city; Rome is
no exception.

Don't pay much attention to the number of stars a hotel has, as it has
almost nothing to do with the overall quality. The venere site has
traveller reviews, but the best site for traveller reviews is
www.tripadvisor.com . I recommend always checking an unknown hotel on
that site before making a reservation.

I was just in Rome for the weekend. I stayed at the Hotel Lucia, where
I've stayed other times. It's a very inexpensive hotel near Termini
Station. It's on a rather "lively" street, where you really have to
pay attention to who's getting close to you, but I've never had any
problem there. The hotel is clean and quiet, and run by a Roman family
who live on the premises. However, this is a very small hotel, and
wouldn't likely have 6 double rooms. They do have an elevator and air
conditioning. They're on the sixth floor of a building that has half a
dozen hotels in it, and it's literally two minutes' walk from the
station.

You don't define 'reasonable'. The Quirinale on Via Nazionale is a larger
place. I think the rack rate is around $300/nt, but just two years ago we
called the hotel to see if we could negotiate down for 8 doubles, and they
put us up for under 200, but not much under. It's proximity to the places
you mention is what brought it to mind. It's a very short walk to downtown
and Trevi. It's a nice enough place.

If it's cheaper that you want, look into the area around Vatican City.
There you'll find any number of decent places for under $150/nt rack rate,
and again, call the hotel with your request for six rooms. They may make a
deal, too.

Try www.venere.com We found our hotel, a couple of blocks from the Opera
House via the site. We needed 3 rooms. Was 110E / night 2 years ago.
Most of the historic sites are fairly close together. Our hotel was short
walk to Trevi and the Metro is very easy to use and resonable.
