There's a spy shop at 1027 Connecticut Ave in downtown DC: "The Counter Spy
Shop". I've walked by it literally thousands of times but never actually
been inside.

I've been inside once, several years ago (so it may have changed since
then, but probably not). They had a few gadgets on display, but the
atmosphere seemed like they were into some serious stuff. I got the
feeling (maybe with actual documentation, it's been so long I can't
remember) that they did installations for embassies and other such
significant places around town. If I *really* needed to spy on someone
or figure out if someone was spying on me, I'll bet they would have
exactly what I needed and the expertise to set it up, at a hefty price
tag.

FWIW there is a store called SpyExchange in Austin, TX. I don't know where
you were in the US but if there is one here there are probably others. The
problem is finding them. This particular one has a web site.

It looks like they HAD a web site. Now it seems to be on sale... Great, i
can't
even find stuff like that on the web.

There's a place called the "Spy Shop" or something like that, in Fort
Lauderdale, on Oakland Park Blvd. (between Andrews and Powerline IIRC).
I've never been in it, but I've driven past it any number of times.

It's kind of fallen out of vogue, except the really hard core security
stuff drug dealers steal from the DEA. ;-)

Take a look at www.shomer-tec.com

It's a law enforcement/military equipment supply but some of their stuff is of
the "spy" nature.

There's a spy store at Fisherman's Wharf. Haven't visited it yet but plan to.

ou need to find a specialised store or an oneline/catalog retailer. I
doubt if such things are forbidden in the U.S. (or maybe prohibited from
use but certainly not illegal to buy/sell/own)

Definitely not. I think you would most likely find more online stores
than physical shops. If you are in any major city, most certainly NYC
or DC, probably LA and Chicago, you should find several people
peddling such wares.

Now -- most of those shops have a tendency to be complete ripoffs.
For example, take the $1000-$2500 bug detectors these companies sell.
What are they? Normally $300(sometimes less) frequency counters.
Will they detect bugs? Maybe. Depending on power output, frequency
used, etc. I even believe these spy shops have some phony non-profit
"licensing"(ie pay us and you are in) organizations.
