Carnival Destiny
We are scheduled for a cruise on the Destiny next Monday, Jan 25.
Understand there have been propulsion issues on the current cruise with the Destiny overnighting in Nassau for repairs. Not much info available, does anyone know the details of the mechanical issues? Thanx in advance Frank |

If you go to www.cruisecritic.com you might find some information. Check the Carnival boards and also the roll call for the current sailing and for your sailing. sue |

Seems as if they made sufficient repairs overnight in Nassau to cruise at a normal speed. We cruised on the Destiny in 2006. Shortly before our cruise, they had azopod issues and reading Cruisecritic, the Destiny has had a history of mechanical issues. |

Carnival Destiny
Just got off the Destiny yesterday. Cancelled both Jamaica and Grfand
Cayman. It was a real waste of a week. On a plane heading home. Not enough time to get it all down. Bewware of this ship and Carnival as a whole. All they want is you money. Seems it is not about long term customer satisfaction as it isz about short term gains! I'll post more later. Gotta go for now. |

Carnival Destiny
You are very welcome.
Sorry about the typos in my previous post, I was on my phone at the time. We mustered prior to sailing, now that was scary. We did not fell that the crew onboard was mature enough to handle any emergency, let alone maintaining composure on a sinking ship. They reminded me of the young kids you see running the rides at Cedar Point and Six Flags. But those places ALWAYS have older management as well. Not a good beginning. We left port about 4 hours behind schedule. There were "reasons" -- potable water, medical emergency, etc. It seems that there may have been issues before we left, but we were not told about it. We we on track, but behind schedule, way behind. Based on our position on the second day, I told our group we had problems and would most likely turn around. The captain assured us they were working on it and we would sail straight to Grand Cayman. My opinion stayed the same--at the speed we were going, we couldn't even make it back to Miami with no stops without rerouting. Sure enough, Cuba was on the wrong side of the ship. I told my wife were must have rerouted and were heading north. The wrong direction for Grand Cayman. It was several hours before they informed us of the new plan. The captain said he had two choices, either Bahamas or no stop at all. So we will be pleased to know we are going to the Bahamas. We took it as "consider yourselves fortunate we are stopping at all". My wife and I were first time cruisers and while the boat was nice, there are a limited amount of things to do other than party and play the "cruise games" the crew plans out. So we felt trapped. I am not much for just sitting in the sun, so I had my fill on the second day. I watched the two movies they had on the TV and some of the Denver news, a lot of CNN and mostly the ship navigation channel. I worked out to pass the time as well. The room steward was really good. Very attentive and friendly. Our waiter in the main dining hall was also very good, although his English needed a little work. We met a very nice bartender, Silvia, at the Cheer's bar. She genuinely made us feel like she wanted us on board. This was her career--a veteran of 9 years. She made the trip bearable. Too bad it wasn't under better circumstances. I have read some say just enjoy it, you are not at work. I enjoy my work. In fact, as much as that cruise. My wife and I have saved for this for some time. It was our 15th wedding anniversary. I was very disappointed for her. She was looking forward to the beach in Jamaica. I was looking forward to the culture. I have traveled on business all over the country, and into Mexico quite a bit and was looking forward the Caribbean experience. Overnight in Nassau was NOT my plan. We could have booked a way cheaper cruise for that. It seems that transfer of GOOD information is not a very high priority, such as making sure you know where you can eat other than the scheduled dinner. First time cruisers are kind of just left to figure it out. When we would ask the staff a question, I don't think they understood what we were asking. At one point, I was asking the shore excursion desk about the details of one of hte excursions and they READ THE DESCRIPTION TO ME. I think I understood the "unclear" description the first time. I just needed MORE information. On a more general note, the appearance of the ship was clean. There was always someone straightening, mopping, and wiping. The casino wreaked of smoke, which I anticipated. The Onyx cigar bar as well, but I was part of that. The large screen outside was nice for the movies at night. The service people (bartenders, cleaning crew, waiters, and performers) seemed to want to please. But the rest were just there. The guys in white just walked around, never saw them stop and ask how things were and what they could do to make the trip better. Perhaps they were afraid of the unhappy passengers. LEADERSHIP is what was missing. Someone needed to be thinking...OK, we are at sea. We are not delivering what we sold. We have 3x as many unhappy passengers as crew, hmmm...how do we make this the most palletable we can. I guess they think slipping a note under the door of your cabin is the way. They threw the workers under the proverbial bus. It is unfortunate because they had no control of the situation. Who is responsible? Ultimately, the captain, but I would have been satisfied with cruise director offering a good explanation. Knowing there are problems and just trying to sweep them under the rug, then offering them as good enough is unacceptable. The leadership needs to step up and be counted. They have good people on the ship, just not in leadership roles it would appear. I filled out my comment card. The crew got the best ratings. The management and captain did not fair so well. Perhaps corporate pulls the strings, but a some point right is right and wrong is wrong. So in the end, if you are looking for a Russian roulette cruise and don't mind going where you didn't plan to go, Carnival Destiny is your ship! If you want to be treated with respect and professionally by ALL the crew, steer clear of this one. Any questions for me? I'll be watching this group and will be happy to answer them. |

Did they offer any sort of compensation like a refund or credit towards a future cruise? Bill We got $75 each back for the port fees. Other than that, the requests are falling on deaf ears and they are referring us to their right to change the itinerary at will. Take a look at: http://www.carnival.com/CMS/Static_T..._contract.aspx Pay particular attention to section 7. We have 52 people in our group. Our travel agent is seeing what he can do. Also look at section 13. Waiver to calss action law suit. I'm sure this is to keep the high $$ lawyers at bay. They know individuals cannot financially fight the cruise line. |
