Default Customs questions for flights returning from England

I'm taking my first international trip in 30 years, and on my return
flying from
London to Philadelphia and Philadelphia to Boston. In other words, I
change plane in Philadelphia and fly to Boston.

Question: Do I go through customs in Philadelphia or Boston?

This is important for me to know because I'm arranging my airport
pickup before I leave, and since my plane arrives late, if I have to
go through customs upon arrival, the person picking me up will not be
able to do so --- since it will probably be midnight. (How long might
one expect going through customs to take - in this case it's a
September flight arriving around 10pm on a Wednesday night? I have no
idea if I should expect it to take 15 minutes or more than an hour).

Can anyone clarify - especially in regard to where I'd go through
customs? THANKS!
Tracy

YOu will go thru immigrations and customs in Philly. You then have to
recheck luggage (usually easy) and go thru full TSA security again. It
can take anywhere fro 15 minutes to a couple hrs depending how many
flights arrive in that period, whether you are late to start with, etc.
Hope you have a nice long layover scheduled in Philadelphia. In my
experience it's more likely you miss the connection due to less than
enough time for all three events.

Thanks for explaining. Fortunately I have about 2 3/4 hours in
Philadelphia.
Hopefully that will be enough.

It is quite enough, you always go thru customs as soon as you disembark

Hi,

you mentioned that it's been your first international trip in 30 years...

so you just might be a "mature" flyer....

one thing you can do that can help you get thru passport control/customs
is to get a wheelchair... request it when you make reservations...
they'll generally be waiting for you when you get off the plane and
you'll go to the front of the lines thank to your valet/attendant.

I was run over 30 years ago... and travel with a "mobility aid"
(brompton folding bicycle) and wearing a steel leg brace (sure to setoff
ANY metal detections etc and sure to attract attention from the TSA)...
but thanks to the wheelchair staff I get thru customs relatively fast.

That would be Philadelphia, Co Durham and Boston, Lincoln I presume?

Avoiding this is why I try to always depart from an airport with
direct flights to Europe. For instance, we usually fly British
Airways from Phoenix to avoid plane changes in the likes of
Minneapolis or Atlanta or Newark. Continuing on from London to
the Continent does require a change, but it seems so much simpler
at LHR or LGW in either direction.

Direct flights are often more expensive from Europe to the US

Why?

Because I could find any other towns of these names in Europe!
