excurtions to Chernobyl
Hello,
I am planning a trip to Ukraine and then a trip to Chernobyl is an obvious excurtion. I have done some searching on the internet and found theese agencies: http://www.ukrcam.com/tour/tour_3.html http://www.elittours.com/en/ukraine/tours/chernobyl http://www.tourkiev.com/chern.html On the schedule, prices and program it looks like this is the same trip, resold by different agencies to slightly different prices. Does anyone know if this is correct? Does any one have any experience with theese or other agencies to share with me? How long does it take to do thge paperwork done for the checkpoints (if I do it through such an agency)? Anything special I should keep in mind? Thank you in advance, Jan |

The BBC has a current, ongoing series about Chernobyl he http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/4843316.stm Another site you may find interesting, both on Chernobyl and also Kiev is: http://www.angelfire.com/extreme4/kiddofspeed/. It's done by a woman from Kiev with an open perspective. I also came across this 'trip report' of the Chernobyl tour you are contemplating, which will lend some sense to the lack of options you see, and the high cost. I read it because of the tagling (Chernobyl: The World's Hottest Holiday Destination). http://www.travelintelligence.net/ws...t_1000337.html. If you do this trip, please write back to the group with your opinion. Keith |

Does anyone know if this is correct? I would be interested as well. I'm going to the Ukraine in September and definitely want to do the Chernobyl trip. However, $344 seems on the expensive side for a one-day excursion (I'll be travelling on my own). How does the pricing work? What I mean is, if three unrelated travellers booked for the same day, would we pay $137 each, or $344 each? (prices from the http://www.ukrcam.com/tour/tour_3.html site) When a friend last visited Kiev they still weren't eating the fish out of the river ............. Surreyman |

Since been moved to its own domain... not too long ago, there was another thread on Chernobyl here in r.t.e in which someone posted the URL. Richard |

Surreyman Farms still affected by Chernobyl The world's worst nuclear disaster happened exactly two decades ago Ten farms in Scotland are still under restrictions because of radioactive contamination from the Chernobyl disaster exactly 20 years ago. The Food Standards Agency said it may be several years before the farms in Stirlingshire and East Ayrshire could be given the all-clear to sell stock. About 3,500 sheep are currently being monitored but farmers' leaders have called for a new risk assessment. A plume of radioactivity blew across Europe after the nuclear accident. Heavy rain soon afterwards washed some of the contamination onto parts of upland Scotland. Contamination remained Radioactivity clung to the peaty soil and was taken up by grazing sheep. Initial movement and sales restrictions on almost 3,000 farms were quickly lifted. However, it has been a slow process clearing the entire Scottish flock, as some contamination remained. The National Farmers Union Scotland said it was time to revisit the science and carry out a review of the situation. So far, more than £3m in compensation has been paid to farmers in Scotland. |
