you'd have to work really hard to die
of thirst in DV, its a pretty busy spot Unfortunately it does happen occasionally. In 120-degree weather, a hiker without adequate water can develop heat stroke in just a few hours. Their thinking becomes confused and they wander off the trail, collapse, and can be dead within a few hours (due to swelling of the brain, I think). ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Remove "NOSPAM" from my address when sending me e-mail. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ - |

The Salton Sea has been mentioned upthread...anybody know about the Spanish galleon that's supposed to be submerged out there?...r That'd be kinda hard seeing that the Salton Sea didnt exist before 1905. You can be adequately hydrated and still die of heat stroke. Indeed its typically more of a problem in humid conditions where the body cant lose heat by perspiration. Meanwhile the biggest killer this year in DV has been flash flooding, 2 people died in the floods of Aug 14/15 and California Highway 190 between Furnace Creek and Death Valley Junction, at Highway 127 will be closed for months for repair. a hiker without adequate water can develop
heat stroke in just a few hours Heat stroke ...is typically more of a problem in humid conditions I'm certainly not an expert on the subject, but the reason I mentioned "heat stroke" is that the official 2004 Visitor's Guide that I picked up at the Visitor's Center a few months ago had a prominent article about a tourist dying of heat stroke. The article, titled "Summer Heat Claims Visitor", talked about a tourist from Europe who was hiking from Golden Canyon to Zabriskie Point, where his wife was waiting for him. The temperature was over 110 F and he took less than a liter of water. When he hadn't reached Zabriskie Point after 3 hours, his wife contacted the rangers. They flew over the area and spotted his body. The article says, "Although rangers reached Gerhard... only 5 hours after he started his hike, he was dead. Heat stroke proved to be the culprit." "Polaris2002" wrote in message ... This dry valley is under the level of the sea. It would be possible to built a canal between Los Angeles and this valley in order to bring the Pacific ocean's water into this valley, so it will become a new Salt Lake and we'll be able to build a new Salt Lake City. Who wants to build a new SLC when no one wants the current one anyway? Many tourists have died when they tried to cross this valley, so it would be better to get it less dry with a big Lake. |
