Shipping to Kenya
Hi
I want to ship some kit (Computer, printer etc) over to the Colobus Trust at Diani in Kenya (www.colobustrust.org) from the UK. However, using the usual routes (Royal Mail etc) is very expensive and I would rather the postage went to the trust! Does anyone have any bright ideas, or even better is anyone travelling down that way from the UK in the next few months and could perhaps take some kit over with them? Thanks Charles www.wildviews.com |

If so, it would be unwise to ask someone to take them past Customs. The Inspectors could easily confiscate them, or at the least, compute and demand the amount of appropriate duty. Are they used? Someone might be able to pass the items off as personal property for personal use. But possibly not. |

They're used -I need to replace them for my son's A-Level requirements, and
would rather pass them on to the trust than try to sell them off at a car-boot etc! What would be the likely outcome of a customs inspection? - surely they wouldn't want to charge any duty? thanks "Dave Patterson" wrote in message ... Not duty, but they might want something so as not to charge duty. When I
took supplies for schools in, I simply had it in my baggage and would always claim it was personal. |

Honestly, no way to predict.
Things that are in a box or boxes would draw more attention that those in a suitcase. African families coming back from abroad with huge suitcases draw more attention than Western tourists. If you had a Briton who could pack the items in a regular suitcase, and that person took his/her bags off the carousel and headed for the exit - maybe seeing someone on the other side waiting, and greeting them as he/she walked, chances are good they wouldn't be stopped by Customs inspectors. That would be the best-case scenario in my experience. |

Thanks Charles www.wildviews.com Hi Charles, You may recall I saw your photos of Kenya a year or two ago. I will contact a friend in Nairobi by email today and see if he has any ideas. I can`t promise he will be able to help but he did ship some amateur radio equipment from UK to Kenya that was second hand a couple of years ago. I will let you know if he has any advice for you. Thanks Pat (and hi!)
Any help appreciated. After the Kilimanjaro/Tarangire trip in 2003, I went back over this year to east Kenya - Tsavo E/W and Amboseli - before ending up at Diani. Usual good fun and 'spots' - if I get time I'll get some pics onto the website (currently under major re-write). Just came across the Colobus Trust by accident, but was very impressed with what they have acheived with few resources and a lot of focus! Hence my desire to help out. They may have a volunteer going over this year who could carry some stuff, but obviously I don't want to lumber them with a problem at Nairobi (or Mombasa).
