I interact with Pit Bulls on a regular basis at Friends of Linden Animal
Shelter where I volunteer. Pit Bulls were bread by the working class of
London in the 1800's to act as guardians for their children. It was only
after cock fighting was outlawed that Pits earned their name and were
bred as fighting dogs. Most Pits have had a good deal of aggression
towards other dogs bred out of them. Ebony a Lab Pit mix is one of my
favorites she's a real mush when it comes to people. She loves male
dogs but has issues with female dogs. We're working with her on that
and she's actually made friends with one of the other female Pit Bulls
at the shelter. The two of them get very vocal if we don't walk them
together.

Pit Bulls, American Staffordshire Terriers, Pit mixes are all wonderful
family pets. They are very intelligent dogs and take to training
easily. They do need sensory and mental stimulation or they can become
destructive around the house. It's not Pit Bulls that are inherently
dangerous, it is careless owners and those that train them to fight who
are at fault. As with any pet, you never let them play with babies or
small childeren without supervision.

Gigi was another of my favorite Pit Bulls. She was a Pit Greyhound
mix. Gigi was such an enthusiastic people lover. She'd greet us with
kisses and leaning against us. (That is a major canine complement among
Pits and large dogs). We had a hard time placing her because she needed
so much room to run. Eventually we found a home on a farm for her.
Much to our surprise the new farm family has trained Gigi to herd sheep!
