I remember seeing that someone here awhile back mentioned that when
they went to Catalina they always rented a golf cart. Seems like a
good idea but I'd sure like some info about how to go about that. We
haven't been before so were thinking that we'd take the little 50
minute tour and then maybe spend the afternoon on our own. Does
anyone have any recommendations about the excursions there... either
what to do or what's not worth the time and money? It's just me and
I'm in my early 50s, my brother is mid 40s, and Mom. Mom has a little
trouble getting around although she can walk some okay. Just no long
trails or half mile treks. With Mom things are a little slower paced.
Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

Cha, we didn't do any excursions so I can't comment specifically on
that, but I will second your idea of doing the tram tour. It was a
great way to get the history and flavor of the island. You can book
online at http://www.catalinainfo.com/outadventuretours.html, but we
just did it when we got to Avalon.

Depends on how adventurous you are. When we were there a little over three
years ago, we (six of us) rented a six-passenger golf cart (yes
six-passenger). While we missed some of the things the bus/tram tour got
to, we also got on roads that a bus couldn't travel- incredible views. We
enjoyed the Wrigley Memorial and botanical garden- huge collection of cacti.

That's exactly what I'm hoping to do. I booked the 50 min tour bus
and thinking that renting the golf cart might be fun afterwards.

Any idea if we will need to book a rental ahead of time or if they
would have one available on a walk-in basis? Gives us more
flexibility since we may decide just to hang out and duck in and out
of shops.

In our experience there were a lot of golf carts available, but we weren't
there at the highest season. Even so, I suspect you can rent one easily.
They are rented on an hourly basis so there are always carts being returned.

Thanks Paul, for the info. I think we'll just play it by ear. The
worst that happens is that we take our little tour and then just have
to hang out around the town and we're fine with that too.
